We recently connected with Kenayra Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Kenayra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Hello, Dolls! My name is Kenayra Brown, and friends commonly refer to me as “Nay.” I am the owner of Just Love Her Hair, LLC., also known as JLHH. JLHH was established in 2017, while I attended in Paul Mitchell the School Raleigh (PMS) to study cosmetology. JLHH mission is to maintain healthy hair, educate clients, and I believe that all women should JUST LOVE HER HAIR. This mission is purposeful to me because as an African American woman I’ve struggled with loving my hair and my goal is to ensure that all black women learn to love their coily tresses.
Kenayra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
JLHH was established because I desired a career change after being an educator for four years. I dreamed of a career that would allow me the opportunity to become an entrepreneur while also being creative, expressive, and flexible. Therefore, in 2017 I enrolled in Paul Mitchell the School Raleigh (PMS) to study cosmetology. While in cosmetology school, I mastered many skills such as cutting, coloring, product knowledge, marketing, and branding. I utilized these skills to cultivate JLHH after becoming a licensed cosmetologist in 2020.
JLHH currently provides services within the Raleigh-Durham area and the Tidewater Virginia area to African American women. I specialize in natural hair care, hair extensions, cuts and color. My services include weave installations, braids, silk presses, etc. My main priority is maintaining healthy hair and educating my clients; I love creating hair magic. I believe that all women should JUST LOVE HER HAIR!
The thing that highlights JLHH is that healthy hair is a priority. Many clients come to me with hair issues and we work together as a team to create a customized hair plan that fits each client within their daily lifestyle and personal hair goals. All clients are offered an in-depth consultation that includes discussions on current hair condition, hair history, and treatment recommendations. Our in-depth consultation also includes a hair and scalp assessment that allows each client to learn more about their specific hair texture, hair wave pattern, and current scalp condition. At the end of each service, all clients receive a e-mailed form that reinforces our goal to help our clients get their hair on a healthier journey.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lessons I had to unlearn within the hair industry is to stray away from the current trend of specializing in one profession of cosmetology. This current trend gives cosmetologists the opportunity to learn and master a specific skill, such as esthetics, make-up, or barbering. I appreciate this trend because it increases the quality of service provided to each client. However, I realized that this trend doesn’t align with my business mission and goals as it limits my skills and creativity. I learned that it is important to maximize your skills and creativity from my cousin, Tenachia, who is one of my hair inspirations. As a hairstylist, Tenachia is skilled at every aspect of cosmetology including hairstyling, barbering, make-up, and more. Growing up, I’ve always admired her ability to utilize her skills to provide a unique experience for each of her clients. Whenever her clients sit in her chair, we all know that they will be leaving with a style that fully compliments their hair desires. Therefore, I’ve used this mindset as well to offer my clients a variety of services which allows me the opportunity to consistently create hair magic.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been staying dedicated to the mission and purpose of my business, which is maintaining healthy hair and educating my clients. I utilize this mission and purpose to ensure that I always provide quality service to each of my clients. I treat every client as an individual and make sure that I am always concerned with the integrity of each client’s hair. Within the hair industry, if you ensure that you are providing quality service along with education, your clientele will grow with consistency because those are two things that clients value in this industry.
