We were lucky to catch up with Saul Flores recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Saul thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The way that I learned to do things in photography was to constantly research what others were doing and gather bits and pieces of information from various sources. I found that applying this knowledge to my current work, or in this case, my photography, was a crucial aspect of improving my skills. When I became deeply involved in learning about Street photography, I sought out other street photographers who were producing the kind of work I aspired to create.
Reflecting on my learning journey, I now realize that to speed up my learning process, I could have actively sought out mentors or taken photography workshops. Learning directly from experienced individuals would have provided invaluable insights and practical tips. I could have engaged in more collaborative projects with fellow photographers to share experiences and learn from each other.
Saul , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Salt Lake City-based photographer with a deep passion for my craft. My journey into photography began early on when I was exploring different career paths. Once I discovered my love for capturing moments through the lens, there was no turning back. As I delved into the world of photography, I decided to showcase my work on social media, particularly Instagram, where I shared images that resonated with people.
The positive response on social media opened up exciting opportunities for collaborations with companies such as Kimpton, The Advenire Utah, and Riverhorse on Main. These collaborations allowed me to expand my reach and work on various projects, capturing the essence of their brands and spaces through my photography.
Alongside my photography journey, I pursued education at the University of Utah, where I studied graphic design. This decision further fueled my passion for visual arts and digital design. As a result, I developed a deep appreciation for crafting digital assets for businesses beyond the surface level of logos and business cards. One of the main problems I solve for my clients is providing them with captivating and authentic visual content that helps elevate their brand identity and message. I understand the power of visual storytelling in today’s competitive market and strive to deliver images that leave a lasting impression on their audiences.
What sets me apart from others is not just my eye for detail and artistic vision but also my background in graphic design. This unique combination allows me to bring an extra layer of creativity and expertise to my photography, especially when collaborating with businesses to create effective digital assets for their marketing and branding needs.
I take great pride in the relationships I build with my clients and the impact my work has on their success. The trust and satisfaction my clients place in me are invaluable, and it drives me to constantly push my creative boundaries to deliver exceptional results.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes, my overall mission that I want to accomplish is to work with companies and reevaluate their brand mission and/or look to get them to the next step in their identity. This is why I ventured into graphic design because I had a genuine curiosity to understand what goes into creating digital assets that carry significant meaning and can be applied across all aspects of a company’s collateral.
Beyond just focusing on the brand identity itself, I am deeply interested in exploring how identity can extend beyond the brand and connect more intimately with the individual. I believe in creating human-centered designs that resonate with people on a personal level. I aim to craft visual experiences that evoke emotions, tell stories, and foster a genuine connection between the brand and its audience.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is delivering the end product and witnessing the person’s reaction when they see the final work. There’s a sense of fulfillment and joy when someone appreciates the intricate details. Knowing that my creative work has the power to evoke emotions, spark connections, and bring ideas to life is incredibly fulfilling. Whether it’s a captivating photograph that captures a moment in time or a thoughtfully designed digital asset that resonates with a brand’s identity, seeing the impact my work has on others is truly rewarding.
