We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabby Jockers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
Both my best & worst investments as a business owner are related to education and online courses.
My worst investment was an expensive money mindset course…that ended up basically being the same content as a book, plus a private Facebook group. I got sucked into the sales tactics and invested in the spur of the moment, which I later regretted. I learned a lot from this experience about aligning my business spending with business priorities & strategy, especially when it comes to major purchases.
My best investment was training to coach my photography clients for real emotion & body language expression. This training helped me develop my skills to provide the high caliber of service I wanted to give my clients. It was directly related to my business goals at the time -creating an unmatched client experience. It filled a vital gap in my skillset, as it included study of fine art to learn how artists across genre use body language, composition, lighting, and other elements of the art to inspire deep, visceral reactions from the viewer.
And it connected me with a wonderful community of fellow photographers who also cared deeply about their clients and providing a powerful experience for them in the studio.
That great investment, which included both virtual and in-person training, was the most money I spent on any one thing in my business. It gave me the tools to create a phenomenal client experience consistently. No regrets there!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Gabby Jockers and I am the Mindful Boudoir Photographer and owner of Embodied Art Boudoir, a body positive boudoir studio in Golden, CO just outside Denver. I use embodiment practices like meditation & breathwork to help my clients get out of their heads and into their bodies. I am profoundly passionate about creating an experience for my clients that goes beyond just a ‘sexy photoshoot’ and serves as a stepping stone to the next step of their self love journey. I am also the co-creator of The Body Deck, a body image-focused affirmation card deck sold on Etsy.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As anyone who has made it past the 3 year mark of business can attest – that itself requires tremendous resilience! The startup years are tough, especially when you’re still in the early stages of figuring out what you’re doing and how to find customers to keep your business alive.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My co-creator of The Body Deck, a body-positive affirmation card deck, and I have been friends since we were 7/8 years old! As kids we would play exploring, photography, collages, writing, art, and other activities that inspired the creativity and play we bring into our current careers. I’m grateful for a life long friend whose skills compliment mine to create a perfect team!
