We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Diane Silver. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Diane below.
Alright, Diane thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I was raised in a very large family. Irrespective of gender we all needed to know how to sew, clean, sweep, do laundry etc. I suppose that gave me a particular skill set that I utilize in my craft. Working with my hands in this context becomes a transformative act, both in reclaiming traditionally female-dominated fields and reshaping the narrative surrounding artistry and gender.

Diane, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Diane Silver is a minimalist artist who works with ceramic, wax, and textiles. She was born and raised in Los Angeles. Her studio is located in Inglewood, California.
Her art is characterized by its simplicity, clean lines, and the natural beauty of the materials she uses. She draws inspiration from the world around her and within her, often incorporating organic shapes and textures into her work. Her use of natural fibers such as hemp and thread adds an additional layer of depth and texture to her pieces.
In December 2023 Silver will be in a solo show at Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica at Bergamot Station.
In January 2024, one of Silver’s pieces will be exhibited at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, California. This work will focus on the ideas of social justice and a woman’s right to autonomy over her body. Through this piece, Silver seeks to bring attention to the importance of reproductive rights and the need for society to respect a woman’s choices regarding her own body.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting to do what I want whenever I want and only having myself to blame or praise with the outcome.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
It takes a lot of courage to put ones self out there for all to see. No one is telling us what to do or how to do it. Especially if you attempt to go beyond what others have done it can be misinterpreted due to it being so new and not yet embraced by the art world and general public.
