We recently connected with Desiree Loveless and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Desiree, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have always been passionate about fashion and photography. When I was 20 I would study retail and high fashion trends and it led me into doing personal styling for bands and celebrities. I had modeled previously and took photography courses in high school, but I didn’t take it seriously until I was 23. I didn’t know much about DSLR cameras or editing, so I got on Youtube and would watch it every day after work to learn about camera settings, editing, lighting and composition. Knowing what I know now, I wish I had done more hands on education and worked with other creatives alike to gain more perspective and knowledge. I used to struggle with terrible social anxiety and lacked confidence so meeting new people was a struggle for me and that was definitely an obstacle that I had to work on in order for me to be successful.
Desiree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am essentially a jack of all trades in the fashion world. I am a Stylist, Creative Director, and Photographer first, but have experience in PR and Marketing for fashion brands as well. I’ve worked in commercial fashion and for e-commerce brands doing creative direction, styling, branding, photography and more. As well as shot ads and campaigns for high fashion magazines such as British Vogue, Vogue Italia, Teen Vogue, and 12 other magazines.
The biggest thing that sets me apart from others is the amount of knowledge I have not only as a creative, but also the backend knowledge of digital marketing and management. I’ve worked as a Creative Director, Project Manager, and managed different marketing and creative departments that makes a fashion brand successful.
I think the biggest thing that I am proud of is the ability to put on so many different hats in this industry and to be able to be moldable and successful with them all. Because of my social anxiety in my early 20s, it took me a while to become confident in what I do, but experience and pushing myself has completely changed that.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation came with working with different amazing people and companies. Most people know me for my creative and hard work, but also my charismatic personality and friendliness. I pride myself on being a very personable and empathetic person so that’s helped me gain connections and friendships with people in the industry. However, I’m also very hardworking, creative, and bold so that’s ultimately been why I’ve been able to be successful in the creative field. I do believe that in order to have a successful reputation in this industry it’s not just about what you do or know, but the type of person you are.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for clients has been social media and word of mouth. Keeping my instagram up to date with my work and making new connections through instagram has been ultimately where I’ve been the most successful.
