We were lucky to catch up with Vivica Satterwhite recently and have shared our conversation below.
Vivica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
in high school I joined a photography class for graduation credits, I learned the basic photography and videography skills but after I graduated I was into budling my own style of photography, and pretty much after that everything else was self taught. what I could’ve done to speed up my learning process was ask more questions to people I connect with, but don’t know too well. other than that I am very appreciative at the pace things have been going, everything great takes time. One of the skills that was most essential to me during the learning process of everything was self- management. learning to stay productive and always creating in these crazy times but mainly doing it for me. its so easy to get caught up trying to please the world, but at the end of the day, it’s all about you. the main obstacles of learning more was working a full time job on top of trying to do and learn new techniques as a photographer. I would attend a lot of events or want to travel, but the way my schedule used to be set up, it was very hard to juggle both.
Vivica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Vivica Satterwhite, I am 25 years old and was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I got into photography at an very young age because of my grandmother who was into photography herself, She would capture all the family milestones and memories. at the age of 13 I was gifted my first digital camera, I would capture photos of friends at school, family, and things around the neighborhood. I began to make it a business in summer of 2018, gaining my first few clients I started to learn how to operate my business, it wasn’t easy at all at first but things began to smooth sail once I got certain techniques and patterns down. What I feel that separates me from others in my work ethic but still making my clients feeling happy, comfortable and at ease. Getting pictures taken may be easy in some cases but its been times where I would run into certain obstacles. What I’m most proud of is my commutation skills growing year by year, I grew up quiet so getting into the business and learning to talk more was a bit challenging, but it has gotten me so far. One main factor that I want everybody to know about me and my brand and just life in general; is to express. document everything. You don’t have to be in competition with nobody, have a lot of followers, be popular etc. Do it all for you. my favorite quote to live by is ” the best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.” – Andy Warhol
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is knowing I could fulfil what I want creatively, but on top of making my client satisfied with the results. a lot of people come to me for creative ideas, but its all about execution. Before people book with me, I always ask them what’s they’re creative vision so I can get a insight of how they want things. With crazy timing, sometimes I don’t have solid way to set shoots up, so I work and make set ups as I go but when I see the results, I get extremely happy, and that’s simply the art in it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best and my favorite source of new clients for me is going to events such as art shows, concerts, night clubs, traveling the world, and more. When I’m working at a event or just taking photos just because (I always carry a camera with me) people will come up to me and ask me about my cameras, business cards, my background, all kinds of questions that lead to them being my new client.
