Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Paula Ruiz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Paula, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
Besides demanding a keen and sensitive eye, to get to the intended shot, it is important for a photographer to rely on the most up-to-date equipment, adequate lighting resources, and advanced software and techniques in image editing. A more detailed lens, for example, would be able to insinuate the sharpness through a different focus, thus capturing the special photo. I prefer to edit my own photos, not sending them off, because my mind envisions the outcome from beginning to end. Within each step in the process, I have invested in state-of-the-art equipment and constantly learn new techniques and market trends.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am originally from Brazil, where I started my professional photography career more than 13 years ago. My educational studies resulted in a bachelor’s in speech therapy and a master’s in business administration with a focus in marketing. Although now I stand behind the camera, my relationship with photography began in front of the camera, as a professional hand model in my teenage years. With the numerous advertising campaigns that I participated in, gathering intel from the incredible professionals around me, every time increasing my interest and curiosity, until I decided to pursue this career myself. After intense studying and shadowing my experienced photographer friends, I attempted to eternalize these precious moments into images. I work with events, family portraits, pregnant women, children, newborns, and birth. It is a profession, indeed, but also a great source of joy and satisfaction!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Without a doubt, word of mouth marketing has been the deciding factor for my reputation. I started by photographing my daughter’s friends’ parties and was slowly indicated to those who knew of my work. Little by little, I gathered a client list and expanded my offered services. When we moved to Houston, now eight years ago, history repeated itself and I had to explore the local market, with the advantage that I brought with me a good load of experience.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Upon first meeting a client, I try to understand their characteristics and expectations in order to do the best job possible. As a process that involves proper synergy, this proximity often creates bonds of friendship. In fact, it is one of the biggest joys in this industry! Furthermore, working with families allows me to develop rehearsals or photograph events in all of their phases of life, from birth to marriage, passing through various commemorative dates.
