Alright, Lakesha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?

SunFlower Births originated from a dream that I had, months before becoming Certified as a Holistic Doula. It was a dream that felt so surreal and in that dream, I saw me helping families with a SunFlower on my shirt. It was quite the revelation because SunFlower are my favorite and I love what they symbolize, because it describes my personality so well.

“Sunflowers symbolize loyalty, and adoration, because of their association with the sun, sunflowers are well-known for being a happy flower and the perfect bloom for a summer flower delivery to brighten someone’s mood!”

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I am a full-spectrum doula, midwife assistant, educator, and community member of many organizations and committees. I take pride in all that I do and I think my passion for this, is what brings me joy and the success I’ve achieved thus far.

I offer birth and postpartum support, along with providing resources to families in need.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

In 2022, I was nominated for two awards, one of them being for the Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Although I didn’t win, I still showed up to support the winners and knew that one day my time would come. The following year, I was nominated again and I couldn’t believe it, so I didn’t think much about it, being that I had lost the previous year. One day, while sitting at my desk, I started to check my emails. While scrolling I came across an email that said “Congratulations, you’re the winner”. At first, I thought it was a spam email because I wasn’t used to winning anything to this magnitude but long behold after opening the email, I realized that I had won and it was REAL, lol. I couldn’t do anything at the moment but cry and praise God because I knew that my hard work would pay off, I just didn’t think it would happen that soon. Moral of this story is to never give up, no matter what. Everything will align with your goals and your dreams in due time. To be recognized as the 2023 Young Entrepreneur of the Year, gave me the hope that I needed and the reassurance that my work is not in vain.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

After winning the “2023 Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award, I realized that, you must keep going no matter what cards you’re dealt with in your life. I had to unlearn self sabotage and learn self-confidence, by remaining focused and motivated. Having to detox from all of the negative distractions and replacing them with positive energy and thoughts has taught me so much about myself and having control of my destiny.
