We were lucky to catch up with Rick Hierro recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rick, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Absolutely! I am thrilled to share my journey of turning my creative work into a full-time living. While it wasn’t an overnight success story, it has been a rewarding and fulfilling path that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
When I first started my career in podcasting and comedy, making a living solely from my creative work seemed like a distant dream. I had to balance a full-time jobs to support My Wife, two kids and myself while pursuing my passion relentlessly. Those early years were challenging, filled with countless hours of creating and recording content and a lot of hustle.
One of the major steps in my journey was when I caught the attention of industry professionals. This breakthrough came after years of dedication and persistence, as I continued to refine my comedic skills and make connections within the industry. It was during this time that I began to attract larger audiences and secure more significant opportunities.
The creation of “The Rick H. Show” was a pivotal moment for me. It provided a platform to showcase my talent and brought my work to a wider audience. With each episode, I gained more recognition and built a loyal following. The show’s success opened doors to corporate events, touring opportunities, and even endorsements, solidifying my position as a full-time entertainer.
However, it’s essential to note that the road to success was not without its obstacles. There were moments of doubt and setbacks along the way. But I persevered, constantly learning and adapting to the ever-changing landscape of the entertainment industry.
Looking back, I do believe there are steps I could have taken to potentially speed up the process. Networking and building connections early on would have likely provided more opportunities and exposure. Additionally, investing in personal branding and marketing strategies could have helped me stand out and reach a broader audience sooner.
Nonetheless, I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey. The challenges and milestones I encountered have shaped me into the entertainer I am today. Every experience, both positive and negative, has contributed to my growth and success.
As I continue on this incredible ride, I am grateful for the support of my fans and the opportunities that have come my way. Earning a full-time living from my creative work has been a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in oneself. It’s proof that with hard work, determination, and a little sprinkle of luck, dreams can become a reality.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and entertainer is the ability to connect with people on a profound level. Laughter, in particular, has an incredible power to transcend barriers and bring joy to people’s lives. The knowledge that my work has the capacity to brighten someone’s day, even if only for a moment, is truly fulfilling.
When I step onto that stage or appear on screen, I am given the opportunity to create a shared experience with my audience. In those moments, we become connected through laughter and the shared understanding that life, with all its ups and downs, is meant to be enjoyed. The genuine laughter and smiles I see in the crowd are like fuel to my soul.
Moreover, as an artist, I have the privilege of being able to shed light on important social issues and impact positive change. Comedy allows me to address serious topics in a way that resonates with people, encouraging them to reflect, challenge assumptions, and see things from a different perspective. The ability to use my creativity and platform for social good is deeply rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference, no matter how small.
Additionally, the freedom of expression that comes with being an artist is immensely gratifying. I have the liberty to explore different characters, push boundaries, and experiment with ideas that challenge both myself and the audience. It’s a constant journey of growth and self-discovery, and I find immense joy in the process of continually evolving as a creative individual.
Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the connection and impact I have on people’s lives. To know that I have the ability to bring laughter, happiness, and perhaps even a momentary escape from the challenges of life is an incredibly humbling and gratifying experience. It’s a reminder that the work I do goes beyond entertainment—it has the power to uplift, inspire, and create lasting memories. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my view, supporting artists, creatives, and fostering a thriving creative ecosystem requires a collective effort from both society and various stakeholders. Here are a few key aspects that I believe can make a significant difference:
Recognize and value the arts: Society should recognize the immense value that artists and creatives bring to our cultural fabric. This starts with acknowledging that the arts are not just a form of entertainment but an integral part of our collective identity. Supporting local artists, attending cultural events, and investing in arts education are ways to demonstrate this appreciation.
