We recently connected with K Sarai and have shared our conversation below.
Hi K Sarai, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
While some of my work is for entertainment purposes only, I really enjoy creating songs and lyrics with a deeper meaning. One of those songs is called Better. It’s talks about my life in full. The song encompasses the ups and downs of being a child growing up in the south, going to church frequently and growing into an adult with a host of life lessons under my belt. The final line on this song “I just wanna be better in the name of whoever.” acknowledges the current stage of success while also nodding to the need to not only change but to grow and develop. It’s a unusual song in that it doesn’t actually have a hook or chorus. However, the story that needed to be told remains uninterrupted and perfectly scripted.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a songwriter and artist, I feel that by expressing myself freely I give others the inspiration to do the same. I feel strongly about this because I’ve been to music performances and felt compelled at an early age to do the same when I got older. I’ve always been a singer and loved how I felt when singing even just around the house. I loved how music could move people and bring us all together and knew that not only did I want to do it when I grew up but that it would be my life’s purpose. I believe that the more you do something, the better you get. And the better you get, the more you’ll connect with people who either want to assist or support you in some way. I’m most proud of how I’ve developed myself as a songwriter and have written for and vocal produced several other artists to create music that they love so much.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to inspire creativity and confidence. I used to think I’d have to give lectures about how I went from being someone who had very little confidence to someone who can perform on stages large and small. As it turns out, showing up as yourself is one of the highest forms of inspiration. It needs no explanation. I’ve found that people will listen to my songs more so I began turning my lessons into lyrics. I remind people to keep shining, growing, and to love themselves over and over again. I explain the ways I changed, the twists and turns in hopes that others will avoid the mistakes. Set to a nice beat, people are also understanding their own power while enjoying the music. I love the process.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson for me is probably similar to most. I had to unlearn that everyone else’s opinion mattered. It doesn’t. As an example, there have been songs that I was told would not be great songs. I had a particular song that I loved that sat on my laptop for quite some time and I refused to share it or perform it. To this day, whenever I sing that song, the crowd loves it and begins to sing along with me. We can never really say why some people say no to our creations but if we say yes to them, our faith in ourselves really encourages other people to enjoy our art as well..
