We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fabio Alejandro Rojas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fabio Alejandro, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents never gave me anything just because.. it was very clear from the beginning i had to have not just a strong desire but a plan and the will to earn it, Like with my first guitar and how working a few hours and developing a plan so then i could with in a budget get the instrument, even more drastic asking for a drum set for about seven years but i could only get it after showing to them my commitment to music by playing the guitar and piano ok on point and of course taking care of my responsibility at home and school. The idea that talent is great but it’s not suficiente to make it happened was important, that not everything in life was music, the personal, family, community, social, professional responsabities needed attention as well.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Fabio Alejandro Rojas and our business and family recording studio, Refugio Music, began in 2007 in Bogota Colombia where I was born and raised. Refugio Music is currently located in National City in south San Diego and we provide music education, entertainment, and audio/video production services. I got into music at a very young age following the steps of my father. Along the years I have toured with multiple bands including a local favorite The B-Side Players. My audio engineering career began with my studies at McNally Smith College of Music. After operating our family owned recording studio here in San Diego for the past seven years, we have had the opportunity to work with multiple organizations from the grassroots level to corporate and our services have embedded us in the community.
We would like to extend an invitation to our future clients who desire to develop and expand their creative and musical ideas. Refugio Music supports the creativity of individuals, groups and organizations with a desire to produce audio-professional projects. We provide education, entertainment and music services to the community and continue to support and inspire the voice of the people. Our Vision is to inspire as a creative hub for upcoming artists, musicians, and grassroots leaders that are using their talent to fulfill their dreams to inspire many others.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As a musician and engineer that produces audio content and music, it is important to remain faithful to those aspirations that have been passed down as a legacy through my ancestral lineage. I want to honor the investment and the devotion my family has dedicated to this journey. As an audio engineer/producer, It is important to support the vision of each client by providing a service that translates musically and sonically as they envision. Together that is the goal that Refugio Music continues to shape and strive for.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have experienced many positive outcomes from my hard work and dedication to the craft but along the way there has been some difficult challenges such as assimilating to a new culture and system, being a refugee in this country, trying to start a business from scratch. Refugio Music has opened its doors to the public and part of the challenge has been working with people who do not always have good intentions. I have learned from difficult experiences to remain faithful to the mission and the vision despite facing the reality that not everybody wants to see you succeed.
