We recently connected with Honor Godin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Honor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was your school or training experience like? Share an anecdote or two that you feel illustrate important aspects or the overall nature of your schooling/training experience.
People often asked me what university I graduated from, and even though I actually did attend university, I often jokingly reply that I went to ‘Trauma U’!
I say this because much of the education I received to be able to support my clients came through my own personal experiences of transforming my personal traumas into triumphs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
During one of the most difficult times in my life, I awoke to what I now see as the ‘holy grail’ of true success and fulfillment. I began to see that struggles and traumas turn into great strengths if we can identify and claim the strengths in them. Any struggle we experience contains very unique and individual strengths, and the hidden strength will be the ‘opposite’ of the struggles that we have experienced. For example, I grew up with guilt and shame, and I was able to transform my guilt and shame by reclaiming the opposite returning character strengths of self-worth, and self-love. Now I teach others how to do the same. Our company is committed to ensuring our client’s success by supporting them in identifying, reclaiming, and applying their great strengths. Our clients find and live their true purpose and mission in life. They become strong in and fit in all areas of their life.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
To succeed as a life coach, it is of utmost importance to be willing to ‘go first’ and be committed to your own upgrades in life.
#1. Be willing to ‘go first’ and have experiences in your own life that challenge you and call you to new ways of seeing and operating in your life. The most important and instrumental trait I have in being a highly effective coach is my own first-hand experience of many of the challenges that my clients experience. I continually apply my coaching skills to my own personal and inner life and so it is often my own life experiences that I draw from when I am coaching. I myself have walked through the pain of addiction, low self-esteem, and financial and relationship challenges and I now continually experience success in these areas.
A great coach will have navigated many life changes and turned many adversities into successes.
They are willing to have their life experiences be unique opportunities for their own personal growth and then they can offer a pathway that will support their clients. You can become a lighthouse for others when you have mastered illuminating your own path first.
#2. BE COMMITTED TO YOUR OWN SELF COACHING:
It has been said that it takes 10,000 hours of study to become an expert.
Being a highly effective coach means that you are actually living your tools and you are continuously gaining new insights. It requires a commitment to take great care of yourself emotionally, physically, and spiritually and to continue your own studies and growth. A great coach is continually developing their own intuition; they are committed to finding their own blind spots and limiting beliefs. They ensure they don’t become stagnant because they continually expand and call themselves forward. It takes a high level of commitment. It’s not easy but it is glorious and so worth it.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Results.
The coaching I offer is effective and it produces results. People can see when a person has really shifted. They notice they are shinier, happier, and more at ease. have been fortunate to have clients that experience their own miraculous results from our coaching and then they desire to share with their friends, family, and loved ones so they can also experience miracles in their lives.
