We recently connected with Candace Fenderson and have shared our conversation below.

Candace, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?

To be honest, being a candle maker and having my own candle business wasn’t anything that I ever considered. I’ve always had a love for candles, the different scents and how they made me feel. What I didn’t realize is just how much they had become a big part of my life. So, one day as I was sitting home, I went to light a candle and the idea of starting my own candle business came to me. It was such a strong feeling of possibility that I immediately started doing my research. I went to YouTube and scoured video after video. I took notes, looked up suppliers and soon after, placed an order to at least try it out. From the moment that my supplies were delivered, I felt a calmness and surety come over me that I had never felt. Even during my initial trials, tribulations and testing, I noticed how I began to feel empowered. There was something happening in the process of me making candles. My prayer life increased, I incorporated prayer and worship into my routine. I began to ask God to provide my customers what they needed most. I wanted people to feel the presence of God when using my products. To this day, the compliments that I have gotten are testimonies of my prayers.

Until I started, I didn’t know anything about the different wicks, fragrance oils, candle vessels and just about everything it took to make one candle. But, I didn’t let it deter me. I knew that the journey I was on, was not just for me. It’s for every person who has felt like they have lost their way.

As far as the next month and year, I’m starting to offer candle making classes and even extending it to virtual classes. Along with that, I’m also creating avenues for other local businesses to come in contact with customers to showcase their products and services. I’m continuing to expand my business into a total package of products that not only employs others, but inspires women and men like myself; those who are domestic and sexual abuse survivors.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Candace Fenderson, proud owner of Calm & Cozy Co. In addition to being a candle maker, I am a devoted mother to two incredible adult children and a joyful Gigi to three beautiful granddaughters. Jacksonville, FL is not just my birthplace, but also my cherished hometown, where I have rooted my life’s journey. I come from a close-knit family with one brother, and as the oldest, I have embraced a sense of responsibility throughout my life.

The path of resilience and perseverance is one I have forged through personal growth and experiences. There have been moments when it seemed easier to turn away from challenges rather than face them head-on. However, everything changed when I crossed paths with my Pastor, Dr. Keva Hampton, many years ago. Through her guidance, teachings, and the abundant love of God she shared, my life has gradually unfolded into something greater. Embracing the healing journey has instilled in me a newfound discipline, both in my business and personal life. Whenever the need arises, I allow myself to step away from candle making and event planning, but I do not linger there for long. Deep within, I know there is still more for me to accomplish.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?

As a business owner, I understand that my customers are what keeps us going. One of the main things I have implemented is a series of emails that keep customers updated on new products or services. I also send out emails just to educate customers on candle selection, fragrances and also tips for getting the very best experience out of their candle products.

As a way to show appreciation to our loyal customers, we are currently exploring ways to implement a rewards program as a form of gratitude and appreciation.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I recently went through the rebranding process for my business. I met with my business coach and we came up with a plan to work on the expansion of my business and brand. We wanted to position me to where my brand could grow in stature and become a household brand name.

This change included a name change, it was not initially Calm & Cozy, and the creation of a new logo. A part of making this change including the professional creation of my website.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to push the

ir business to the next level. The exchange that it takes may or may not be a high price for those in the market. I knew that it was necessary for me and the results speak that. Even existing customers love the rebrand and name change. I strongly suggest to others that as your business grows, be open to the change it requires to get you where you want to be.
