We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DEBBIE POLISKY. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DEBBIE below.
DEBBIE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My Dad was a well known cardiologist, stress management expert and author on stress, from Argentina (where I grew up).
I always admired him as he was very studious, patient and embodied everything he spoke about regarding stress and positivity.
In his early 60s, when I graduated as a Licensed Dietitian from the University of Buenos Aires, instead of thinking about retiring from his private practice, he opened up a modern innovative center called AMECE, American Medical Center for Stress and Nutrition, helping me start my career and be the sole nutritionist of our center. He also taught me everything I know about the Mind and Body connection, and the importance of paying attention to our thoughts as well as our symptoms. How do we treat ourselves with our thoughts on a daily basis? What messages do we give ourselves?
He passed away during the pandemic and left me with this message: Be your own Best Friend, which is why I’ve created self-care programs for leaders and healthcare. As Dad always said, if you don’t take care of yourself, nobody will for you.
My Mom was a positive mother with a colorful personality, full of life, a great singer and cook. She was American, from New York City, and she met my Dad in Miami, as he completed his residency in cardiology in Miami. It was love at first sight.
She also passed away during the pandemic and taught me all about positivity, color in life and having undergone so many surgeries and health issues, her message always was: Never, Ever Give Up.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m a Nutritionist and Wellness Consultant, who loves to collaborate with organizations and the community, creating self-care programs to lead a healthier life. These virtual or live programs include nutrition/healthy cooking, mindfulness/stress management and movement/music and dance.
As a creative entrepreneur and a multicultural, bilingual healthcare professional, I consider myself an innovative content creator, as I love speaking, writing, engaging an audience, creating radio, blogs and video content, dancing Argentine Tango, fundraising for good causes through dance and food.
I’m a self published author of two bilingual books, one for children and families, Dreaming of Food, where veggies and fruits come alive in the kitchen and the other one for adults, Yes, You Can look younger naturally.
Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I grew up, studied nutrition and worked for several years before moving to Arizona for a job opportunity, I always enjoyed both science and creativity.
Both my parents were my inspiration as my Dad was a physician and my Mom loved the arts (music, singing and dance).
I’ve had an interesting career, in two countries, as an employee and entrepreneur, working in all types of settings: clinical, community, university/college, author, speaker, content creator, and with all age groups.
The pandemic brought about major changes which is why I now enjoy creating bilingual self-care programs (including webinars, workshops, speaking live or virtual) for organizations and the community.
I believe our post-pandemic status has created a need for self-care and connection with others, which is why my programs and events allow for groups to connect with themselves and others. My signature program, called Join your self-care party consists of my 5 ME movement, touching on the following topics: Mindset, Mindfulness, Meals (Nutrition and recipes),Movement(Dance with emphasis on Argentine Tango due to its embrace and connection) and Magical Moments (do something fun every day for yourself). These parties have been very well received and can be offered virtually or in person, as a one time event, as a monthly program or annual program, in both English and Spanish.
I’m proud of being an entrepreneur who loves to create, who can work independently and enjoys helping others make better lifestyle choices. Its not about one aspect, such as nutrition, but the combination of mind and body tools, that can help us grow.
As a good listener (and speaker), I enjoy providing customized self-care programs to fit the needs of organizations instead of the same cookie cutter model. I also like being myself, simple, colorful, full of energy. Authenticity is key to creating a personal brand for your business.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped me build my reputation was being myself, just being authentic.
My Dad taught me all about science and the mind/body connection and my Mom taught me all about the arts and creativity, which is why I love music and dance and colorful cooking.
I merge both together to create self-care programs that include Nutrition and Cooking, Mindfulness and Stress Management, Movement through music and dance, Positive Mindset and enjoying hobbies and activities while socializing and connecting with others.
I love to create and share my passion with others, whether virtual or live programs. Organizations and individuals always tell me they feel my energy even through a screen!
Organizations know I am very honest, simple, and complete projects and programs on time.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe there are a series of traits including:
– Passion: Sometimes we don’t get paid for everything we do, but we show up and give it our best. People know when one is authentic and passionate about their work.
– Perseverance: Entrepreneurship is hard work and we depend on ourselves, in the lows and highs. As my Mom said, Never Give Up in the face of adversity, as good times will come again. Learn from your errors or learn from others.
– Patience: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Everything takes time and so does a business.
-Positivity: Look for the silver lining and be hopeful, even when things don’t go as planned.
