We were lucky to catch up with Lia Kim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
Throughout my journey as an entrepreneur and designer, I’ve experienced plenty of ups and downs, encountered failures and made mistakes. If I could start my journey all over again, I would cherish every opportunity that came my way. I would not fear failure nor would I let stress overrule me. There were moments when stress and depression came, causing me to overlook what will come on the future. However, the most valuable lesson life has taught me is that everyone makes mistakes and experiences setbacks, but it’s all part of our human experience. I truly believe that when one door closes, another one opens. As long as you remain diligent, work hard, and maintain a positive mindset, you’ll eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Lia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Currently, I work as a full-time designer, while also freelancing in design and illustration. My passion for art and design was kindled at a young age, largely influenced by my mother, who is an interior designer. From an early age, I was certain I wanted to be a designer, and this inspired me to follow my dream at the Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduating from SCAD, I decided to move to New York City, where I have had the pleasure of working on a wide array of projects and with various clients as a designer and illustrator. One of the aspects I love most about my job is seeing my designs come to life and watching them get featured in the media.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Navigating your career often causes challenges and moments of self-doubt. During those times, I found it essential to allow myself space, refresh and contemplate my career path. Then, I found out that think is just one happening among tons of opportunities and happening out there and it was a such a valuable experience that I could truly hear my voice from inside that what matters most and what do i value and what are my goals. I believe the resilient come from strong belief inside of you that you’ll be thriving one day. After overcoming that difficult period, I now find myself presented with more opportunities than ever before. I credit this recovery to maintaining the mindset that ‘this is not the end of the world.’ It’s this perspective that fuels resilience.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Previously, I was content with what life offered me, not seeking more. However, recent personal and professional experiences have significantly shifted my perspective. I’ve been fortunate to meet individuals who’ve passionately pursued their careers, started their own businesses, and thrived. Their journeys have inspired me to reassess my own career path and ambitions, and they’ve motivated me to reach for the next stage in my life. Inspired by the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had, I’m now more motivated than ever. I’m ready to embrace new challenges, seize opportunities, and carve my own path.
