We were lucky to catch up with LaTroya Sunshiine Griffith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LaTroya Sunshiine, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to sing and act when I was just a little girl. My first lead role was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz stage play when I was 9yrs old. Pretty much after that I was in multiple stage plays and talent shows singing and dancing. I’ve always dreamed of being a STAR and now I am.
LaTroya Sunshiine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is LaTroya Sunshiine I’m an actress and singer and mom from Flint, MI. I just won an award for best actress of 2023 at the FliCityAwards which was such an honor! I’m extremely passionate about what I do. I have been acting and singing since the 3rd grade. I had my first lead role in the 4th grade as Dorothy in the stage play The Wizard of Oz. I’ve been professionally acting since 2017 where I starred as Gennifer in the hit stage play “God Kissed it” by Andrew Aikins Productions. From there I’ve been in 3-4 other stage plays since working alongside some legendary names. I started recording music at the end of 2017 and I have performed in Atlanta, North Carolina & throughout Michigan. I was casted as Robin in my first feature film in 2021 “Absence of Innocence” which can be streamed on Tubi or Amazon Prime. I’m also starring in a few short films on YouTube one (3for10) which has been globally recognized at a film festival, I also am starring a new crime series “City of Savagery ” coming this fall and I am so excited! Watching soap operas growing up piqued my interest in acting watching shows like “All my Children”, “One life to live” & “General Hospital ”. I watched them with my grandmother and was like “I want to do that! I want to be on Tv!” My mom was always playing all kinds of music, singing and making me sing with her which in turn gave me a love for music.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think people struggle with the time frame of when things are supposed to happen instead of just flourishing in their gifts and talents and allowing things in the universe to align. I feel like people get discouraged when things aren’t happening fast enough or they think they’re too old or it’s too late. No matter what you have to keep going and trust that your gifts and talents will make a way for you as long as you’re diligently and consistently working on your craft. It’ll pay off.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I lost my mother in 2017 right after my first show, it was so hard not having her here to physically cheer me on and encourage me like she always did. There were plenty of times I just wanted to shit myself away from everything and everyone in the world… I knew I had to push through no matter what and make my mom proud me knowing that she wouldn’t want me to give up kept me going she always called me “the strong one”
