Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to June Collie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
June, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In my junior year of college, I studied Accounting and still had no clear direction for my future. However, everything changed when I took an elective art class called The Bahamian Survey of Art. This course opened my eyes to a whole new world that I had never experienced before. I was unaware that there was an active art community in The Bahamas, and I discovered that many well-known artists were working full-time. After some research, I worked hard to improve my artistic skills, even sneaking into some of my friend’s art classes to learn. By the end of the year, I asked my parents to allow me to change my major to art, and they agreed. With newfound passion and determination, I went from creating simple doodles to producing impressive works of art.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is June Collie and I am an artist hailing from the beautiful Bahamas. I have been working as an artist since 2011, creating colorful acrylic paintings that focus on women’s empowerment and the rich cultural heritage of my homeland. Additionally, I also offer photography and graphic design services to small businesses through my media company, GROW. Our team specializes in creating effective social media marketing strategies that generate leads and sales for Bahamian businesses.
Recently, I have also opened a small gallery named Sixty 2 Sixty Art Gallery. Our mission is to showcase and sell artworks of new and emerging artists, including paintings, sculptures, and handmade accessories for both men and women. We also offer painting classes for both children and adults. Our primary objective is to increase interest in Bahamian art, whether that means encouraging people to become artists, promoting the appreciation of art, or supporting local artists.

In your view, what can society do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One of the most direct ways to support an artist is by purchasing their work. Unfortunately, many people see creative careers as a mere hobby and tend to ask artists to produce extra work without considering the time and resources required to put it together. By buying an artist’s painting, photo shoot, or music, you are not only helping them put more of their art out there but also showing that their work is appreciated.
Another way to support artists is by sharing their work on social media or subscribing to their online platforms. Everyone should have a favorite artist in their life – whether it’s a visual artist, writer, musician, or artisan. By sharing their work, you can help spread the word and bring more attention to their talent.
Attending art events such as art openings, poetry readings, live band shows, or book signings is another way to show your support. Artists always appreciate seeing and hearing from the public when it comes to the artwork they’ve produced.
If you have a podcast or know someone who does, you can suggest interviewing your favorite artist as a guest. Many media outlets are constantly in search of new guests for interviews, features, and collaborations that their followers would be interested in. This could be an excellent way to get your favorite artist on out there.
If your company or workplace has creative projects to be done, suggest your favorite artist and share their work with them. By doing so, you are not only supporting the artist but also bringing their talent to the forefront.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, the freedom to express myself is the most rewarding aspect of my profession. I am able to create art in my own unique way whenever I please. It brings me great joy to pursue something I am passionate about while also providing for my family through the income earned from my art. Additionally, I am grateful that my artwork can spark conversations about important societal issues. Through my art, I am able to provide a fresh perspective and raise awareness about specific topics.
Lastly, I find personal growth to be the most enjoyable aspect of my artistic journey.
