Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to SXMSIDY. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
SXMSIDY, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Something that has really had a positive impact on me as an artist is the first time someone reached out to let me know that my music had a real impact on their life. I wrote a song called “Lot of Love” a little while ago. It has a dark atmosphere and explores themes of revenge in a relationship, unfaithfulness, and how love can drive our actions. A few weeks after releasing the track, a lady sent me a message on Instagram to share how deeply she connected with the song due to her own personal circumstances.
That’s when I realized the power of music as a conduit for emotions and the shared experiences we all go through. Being a part of someone’s healing process through my music is the most beautiful reward I could hope for.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got involved with music when I was a kid. My teacher told my mother that I needed an outlet for my energy. Around that time, I also discovered my mother’s CD collection. This growing fascination with music led me to start singing and take drum classes. At the age of 12, I began making beats, but I wanted to expand my knowledge, so I taught myself how to play piano, guitar, and bass.
Singing and songwriting are my main activities, and they truly define me as an artist. I would describe my music as dark R&B, as both my instrumentals and lyrics exude a dark and melancholic vibe. I believe this distinctiveness is what makes my music recognizable. I’ve never been a big fan of polished and flawless art.
In terms of the creative process, I’m always eager to push the boundaries of my art by blending different styles like Hip-Hop/Trap, R&B, and Pop. I enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone and creating melodies that allow my spontaneous emotions to prevail over any specific music genre I favor.
I take great pride in staying true to myself and my authentic self-expression through music. If there’s one sentence I want people to remember about me, it’s “Let’s let our souls express themselves.” This means embracing and acknowledging the dark and bright aspects that reside within all of us, without hiding behind pretense or trying to be someone else.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When I first started, I had the belief that being a music artist revolved solely around creating music. However, the reality turned out to be quite different. I vividly recall watching a documentary on James Brown as a child, and for some strange reason, his words stuck with me: “It’s about 30% music and 70% business.”
A few years later, as I gained experience, I came to realize that he was absolutely right. I had to set aside my preconceived notions of a music career and acknowledge that I couldn’t solely focus on making music as much as I would have liked. I had to devote attention to the business side of things as well.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I realized I needed a change in my life when I felt unhappy. Being a spontaneous person, it’s challenging for me to pursue something that doesn’t resonate with me. That’s why I went through a “college dropout” phase, and I’m sure I’m not the only one in this situation. I began to question whether I could spend my entire life doing something that doesn’t reflect my true self, or if I should wholeheartedly pursue happiness and follow my passion. I chose the latter option and decided to fully dedicate myself to music.
