Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ngozi Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ngozi, appreciate you joining us today. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
I’m in an era of my life where I’m finally bringing ALL of my brands & ideas together. I’m definitely doing it in a way that screams ‘innovation.’
During quarantine After converting an old rental property into an indoor/ outdoor production studio/event space (NOHO Production Oasis) I came to terms I had a physical space & the ideas & opportunities to make myself would be endless…
NOHO Production Oasis has been open since 2021 but recently, I decided to dig even deeper into what else the space could be used for. With my background in sketch comedy on GoziTV, I had been itching to possibly have more live shows again. However, I’ve been wanting to utilize the space for even MORE meaningful purposes. A place with more impact. Earlier this year I took the leap & I launched Ngozi Kim’s Creative Gym. This is a mental gym geared to coach individuals looking to become creatively fit with a focus on bringing their ideas to life. In the Creative Gym digital bootcamps are held & recently decided to have in-person bootcamps as well. What better place to creatively Coach people than in the creative space I created! Haha! I’m a firm believer that innovation plus creativity can truly get you the life you desire.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I would consider myself a Jill of many CREATIVE TRADES. In my last semester of college in 2012, I started GoziTV.com this comedy brand definitely showed me that I greatly enjoy creative freedom. It showed me that I actually am the magic I needed to “make it” in this industry. Whatever the industry actually is, I don’t know. I’ve always found value in creating my own space. A space where my ideas wouldn’t be dictated by someone else. Flash forward to 2020. What felt like the apocalypse turned out to be just that in a sense. My old life was OVER! I’m going to be honest, the global Pandemic launched my life into a whole new dimension. I say this because it truly did. From having close college friends leave LA, meeting my business coach on the Clubhouse app to actually publishing 3 eBooks in quarantine, I truly am grateful that I made it on the other side of the craziness. Sometimes it didn’t feel like I would. Even through all the chaos, I continued to create. I continue to help, Coach, & pour into others feeling creatively stuck as well. These days I’m CREATIVELY COACHING & sharing my knowledge, tips, & tricks of working the creative muscle. For over a decade I thought comedy on GoziTV was my purpose, then I thought opening NOHO Production Oasis was my purpose but truth be told Ngozi Kim’s Creative Gym is simply a testament of my creative endeavors & I’m happy to share my purpose with the world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is that I know it’s what I’m supposed to be doing with my life.I think so many people go through life not doing what feeds their soul. The fact that I continue to expand on my creative ideas & have dedicated my life to coaching other creatives through their process this is my biggest reward to my overall existence!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
February 23rd was the 1st event of 2023. It never happened. That day started the LA storms that felt like 40 days & 40 nights but was actually longer than that! The entire outdoor space seemingly got washed away. After the rain continued for months I felt peace. I felt peace in knowing that the rain was actually washing away old mindsets, mental struggles, & limiting beliefs I once held about my business. The long stent of rainfall forced me to REST. & even though I had to rebuild the entire outdoor space at NOHO Production Oasis this year, the immigrant kid in me knew I would rebuild again.
