We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nikki Ewing a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The last semester of undergrad I began taking yoga more seriously. Because of this I knew I wanted to share my journey and that is what I began to do via blogging. Once I secured what I thought would be my dream job I quickly learned the field I was in was not for me. I began to get harassed, called out, and questioned about everything from personal life choices to what I did in the office. Once things began to get too uncomfortable for me I began my exit plan. I saved up $3500 to pay for yoga teacher training and my now husband gave me the remainder. I split my time between working and yoga teacher training for 3 in a half month. Once everything hit a boil I took a risk and quit my job a week after graduating from my program and bet on myself. I got my LLC and began teaching yoga full time and I have not looked back. It led me back to pursuing my Masters to be a Therapist where I can apply everything I teach in Yoga and Mindfulness.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
After teaching yoga for 2 years full time and offering private sessions I found myself wanting to help people more. Fast forward I now offer Trauma Informed Yoga also called Yoga Therapy and Spiritual Wellness Coaching. I have helped clients come into themselves as individuals. You tell me your goal and what is hindering you and I discover how you are holding yourself back. My favorite service to offer is Reiki Therapy. I can tap into your spiritual and emotional blockages before you tell me what is wrong. It is humbling to be of service in this way. I also have 2 self care books I have published as well as a guided meditation on Spotify.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I got to where I am today because I took a chance on myself and what I love. Others saw that and respected it which enabled them to give me a chance. I am forever appreciative of those who gave me a chance.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I think for myself and others the pandemic. I had to go completely online which was trial and error. But I also moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where I was able to start from scratch and examine my direction. It sparked a new creative essence for me. Since then I Polished my services and I’ve added skin care and aromatherapy products to my brand. All with raw herbs and 100% natural essential oils.
