Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joey Jamesley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Joey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When you’re younger, you’re told there’s an “order” to things. That you graduate high school, go to college, get a job, then work that job FOR-E-VER. My journey had me do things a little differently. I did go to Cosmetology school after high school, but the risk I’m talking about came when I was about to be 40. I became a stay at home mom in 2018, but then 2020 and divorce happened and I had to go back to work. It’s a weird misconception that at 40 you’re “too old” to go back to college. But, that’s exactly what I did! I enrolled at SWIHA (Southwest Institute of Healing Arts) and began an entirely new career path. I opened my hypnotherapy and coaching business in 2022, with no clients, no marketing strategy, and being brand new to the space of holistic healing. It was super scary at first, (shoot still is sometimes!) but it’s one of those things where you just have to keep pushing every day! Success comes to those who are persistent! So I’m just taking it one day at a time, and keeping the mindset of Positive Mind, Positive Life!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Being a hairstylist for almost 17 years, that’s some of the cheapest forms of therapy you can get! My clients always felt so comfortable opening up to me, so it seemed only natural to start this business when I had to go back to work after my divorce. In my work I offer Hypnotherapy and Coaching sessions. I specialize in Relationship Recovery (divorce and narcissistic abuse recovery, etc) Fertility Issues, and Stress and Trauma Management.
I’m passionate about these topics because I’ve lived through them myself. I think that gives me an edge in what I do and sets me apart, because I come from a place of understanding and empathy because I’ve lived it too. And I think my client’s appreciate my candidness about my own personal experiences. It shows them they are not alone, and they can speak freely knowing that I understand where they are coming from.
When you come into my office, you enter into a safe space, where I meet you where you’re at, and you are free to be yourself and to open up authentically. I build my relationships on trust and connect with my clients on a personal level. I help you to reprogram old limiting beliefs about yourself, grow self confidence, and leave with tools to use in your every day life. Happiness and stress-free living is attainable for everyone! I can help you to achieve it! My approach is real, authentic and loving, with a big personality that utilizes both the science and the woo-woo in my work. Come learn to live your best life! It all starts in the mind!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Ohhhh, this is a good question! All through school, my class mates and I had to face our own demons! Everyone has some sort of baggage from their past that causes negative thinking in some way, shape or form. For me it was Imposter Syndrome and low self confidence. Because of things in my own past, I had a negative self image playing on repeat in my head; “You’re not good enough” or “Why would anyone want to listen to you?” or “Just give up, this will never work out how you want it to.” Sound familiar?
Man these were hard truths to face and to change! I once heard that we all have our own unique gifts to share with the world, and we are doing a disservice by. not sharing them. Of course I never thought that applied to me! Until I went to school for hypnotherapy. I know now that what I do is important, and that I am good at what I do. A huge mindset shift had to take place, and day in and day out learning at school how to help my clients, was exactly the reality check I needed. We had to practice our craft on each other in school, so there was no way around it. I’m happy to say now, that I truly do believe in what I do, and I know I’m good at it! I love my job, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way! Self work is the best work (as freaking hard as it is!) and it’s totally worth it.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Beyond just loving what you do, having passion for your own continued personal growth I think is so important. That includes continuing to do the work on yourself, mind, body and spirit, as well as continued learning involving your profession. I love learning and taking classes that help me to advance my craft. The more tools I have in my toolbox to help my clients, the better. It shows I care and want to be the best I can be at what I do. I say never stop learning! We never know it all, and we will always have room for more knowledge and growth.
Also doing the personal work, especially in my profession. Practice what you preach, right! If I’m not willing to face my fears and my past and my not-so-pretty thoughts/habits/patterns etc, how can I ask my clients to? That also helps me to be relatable! No one is perfect, no one has it all figured out, no one is totally done healing. There’s always room for growth and self discovery.
