We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikki Teagle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikki below.
Nikki, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
When you have loyal clients that spend their money with you, it’s important to give back! I had a Client Appreciation Dinner for clients that had been coming on a regular basis. I hired a personal Chef and gave out gift bags full of goodies to help keep the clients hair in tact . It was absolutely beautiful and they deserved it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Nikki, and I go by Nik tha maneslayer. I’ve been doing hair since I was 12 years old. It was at that moment I knew it was something I wanted to do forever. I attended Empire Beauty School in Philadelphia, graduating in 2009. After acquiring all the knowledge, I decided that I wanted to stick to servicing natural hair. Though I’m capable of all styling, I like to stick to protective styling such as knotless braids, box braids, boho braids, faux locs, two strand twists, etc. it’s important to me, that we as African American women embrace our natural hair!! What I want people to know most about me is that my passion runs deep in doing hair. I’m not just a stylist, but a beautician. I care about the state of the clients hair and how best to protect it to ensure healthy growth! Doing hair isn’t just a job for me, but my lifetime passion.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly in this time of technology we live in, social media is definitely the best source for obtaining new clients! There are several socially acceptable apps to promote on these days. For me personally, Instagram and Nextdoor have generated the majority of my newer clientele.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Absolutely! Being able to provide a service is one thing, being able to manage that service is what’s going to take work! For me, such books as Milady’s successful salon management for cosmetology students, and The young entrepreneurs guide to starting and running a business were very influential when trying to take my business to the next level. I also signed up for an online course from The Real Boss Babes (which can be found thru IG).
