Ashley Marie , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

From the age of 17 onwards, I frequented various salons for a decade. Although my last salon experience was amazing and lasted for four years, I yearned for something entirely my own. I envisioned a dedicated space solely focused on eyebrows and makeup, unlike the salon I was previously associated with, which primarily specialized in hair and offered other services like massage, nails, and waxing. I had great bosses and felt comfortable in that environment, but I sensed that something crucial was missing.

As I gradually built my client base through word-of-mouth and social media, I found myself booked solid for three months in advance. It was then that I realized the time had come to establish my own space, one that exclusively catered to only makeup and eyebrows. It was going to be top of the line. Everyone that knew that when they walked through the door, they were going to receive the best service. In my mind, I envisioned a pristine, bright, and inviting atmosphere. Although I never initially aspired to own a business, the absence of any other establishment like AMG Beauty Bar compelled me to take the leap. The unwavering support and trust from my loyal clients made me immensely excited about the prospects of success. Now I’ve had AMG for 6 years and I’m so proud of all the experiences that I have gone through goood and bad. I learned so much as a business owner.

Ashley Marie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

As I mentioned entered the beauty industry at a remarkably young age of 17 when I enrolled in beauty school. Hair and makeup had always intrigued me, and I knew it was a career path I wanted to pursue. While I had a brief experience in hair school and working as a hairstylist for a year, I soon realized that cutting and coloring hair wasn’t my true passion, despite enjoying the artistry of styling.

That’s when I made a transition and joined Lord and Taylor as a makeup artist for Lancôme. However, after a year there, I discovered that selling makeup wasn’t fulfilling my desire to work on special occasions and weddings. With that in mind, I decided to leave Lancôme and found a position as the primary makeup artist at a salon. I understood the importance of specializing in a specific craft to build a thriving career. I started to hone down on makeup and semi – permanent eyebrows Clients seek professionals who excel in a particular area rather than generalists.

What sets me apart from many others is my approach to treating clients as if they were dear friends or family. I take great joy in empowering each individual, enhancing their natural beauty, and boosting their confidence. I firmly believe that well-shaped eyebrows have the power to transform one’s entire appearance, and that’s a principle I stand by.

Any advice for managing a team?

The advice I gave for managing a team is being very open with your people. Communication is key to excelling with your employees and always treating them with rest. 🫶🏻

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

During a specific period, I faced a significant challenge when I lost all three of my employees at once. It was a pivotal time for me as I was still in the early stages of learning how to manage a team. I didn’t fully grasp the amount of effort required and the importance of setting clear expectations. In hindsight, I realized that I had not effectively communicated my expectations and made mistakes in how I approached or reacted to certain situations.

This experience taught me valuable lessons about the importance of clear and open communication with my team members. I realized that it is crucial to set clear expectations from the beginning and ensure that everyone is on the same page. Learning from my past shortcomings, I have become more mindful of my communication style and strive to improve it every day, fostering a positive and productive work environment for my team.
