Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Madison Kamas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Madison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Photography has always been a part of my life. Since I can remember, my mom was always taking photos of my sisters and I, and just our life around us. From film to digital, she carried that talent with her for pretty much my whole life. As time went on, she got better, and became more successful. Her passion was newborns, families and senior photos. She had her work printed and featured on nursery floor galleries in hospitals, magazines and even stores! I thought she was just so cool for doing all of that and being so successful all on her own!
I went from taking photos of my dolls and dogs to assisting my mom on shoots and getting my own real subjects to practice on. From there I wanted to learn how to work with lighting, the technical side of the camera and editing from her. I started to practice weekly if not daily, learned from trial and error and became a part of a photography community. With all of that hard work I realized, I am now a successful professional photographer, just like my mom! Eventually, she slowed down on photography and was able to pass down her clients to me which jump started my clientele!
However, there are also some things you just can’t teach. Like a creative-eye. Because of my mom, I was taught the technical side of photography but also was passed down a talent that can’t always be taught. I am forever grateful, as this career has changed my life!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Minnesota based luxury destination wedding and elopement photographer! My art is very timeless, true to color, candid, intimate, romantic and carefree. I believe what sets me apart from others is how much compassion I have towards others. Especially the couples that chose to work with me. I truly care about their experience and the way they feel when they view their photos. I treat every session differently, because every couple is unique! I try to document photos in a more storytelling way, rather than just remember poses and prompts to repeat. I am very proud of how far I have come in a short amount of time in this industry. It has allowed me to travel the world and meet the most incredible people!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a photographer is to make others happy with something so precious and priceless. Moments come and go and memories can fade. So truly, at the end of the day, photos are all you have left. Being a wedding photographer is such a huge responsibility and something that I am beyond honored and grateful to be, and do not take lightly. I can assure you, that if you book with me, you will be in the best of hands, as I truly CARE.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I am currently still working on unlearning is that there really are no rules in photography, and to do and show what inspires me, and to not follow the crowd. Sure there are technical camera settings and certain things a professional should probably know. However, every photographer is their own individual artist. If grainy film inspired, motion blur, perfectly centered, or crooked photos help showcase your brand and your art, I think that should be flaunted and not frowned upon. When the rules are broken, that is where your uniqueness can really shine!
I notice that when I do this, and create for myself, I get the most love and positive feedback from others, because it is different from what they have seen time and time again. It is also okay if not everyone loves your work. They aren’t supposed to. But the ones who do, will trust you in the process and appreciate your work so much more! Which is 100x more rewarding when the work you delivered was inspired and created by YOU.
