Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Autumn Embry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Autumn, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Every day I wake up, and not a minute goes by that I regret the path that I have chosen for myself. I’ve always wanted to be a makeup artist and cosmetologist. So, for me to be able to go to school for something that I love and do it anywhere in the country is a privilege.
By working at a regular job while going through school, I’ve had the opportunity to see what a corporate job looks like. With other previous jobs, they were more contract or temporary and not really a corporate 9-to-5 job. Now I know why Dolly Parton wrote that song, and it’s because a 9-to-5 for most creative entrepreneurial people is a living hell.
Creatives thrive to express themselves and help others express themselves as well, and that is what cosmetology allows me to do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello everyone! My name is Autumn Grace, I am 18 years old and I am a small influencer and makeup artist. I recently started attending beauty school to become a cosmetologist in the state of Idaho.
I got into the beauty industry at a very young age, due to my mom being a model at the time. I learned from makeup artists on set and was able to discover my dream job. I started doing makeup artistry for other people in 7th grade and was making a good side hustle. I did a few dance and photoshoot looks for some friends and family.
In my junior year of high school, I became an assistant for Carolina Garza. I did 2 weddings with her and only did the bridesmaid’s makeup. I’ve also assisted another artist, Madee Nolind (@glambymadee) in this past year for one wedding, where I did the bridesmaid’s makeup as well.
I would say the thing that I provide in my services is one-on-one time. I’m a super chill and casual person, so it’s almost like a friend is doing your makeup – which is what I want the vibe to be. I want everyone to be comfortable while getting their glam done, and for it to be a fun experience.
With assisting, I would say my productivity is my most valuable asset (being able to do a makeup look in 20-30 minutes).
I’m most proud of being able to make connections with people no matter where I am. This industry is all about connections, so I find it important to ask questions and learn about others.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is my friends and family. I strive to become a successful artist, who can in turn advocate for others and also assist my family and friends with whatever they need.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I originally started on Youtube, where I posted grwm’s and vlogs. Sometimes I still post there, but that was a helpful platform. Also, Instagram Reels and Tiktok are your best friends. The algorithm can be unpredictable at times, but if you use a lot of common hashtags – you’re bound to land on a relevant consumer’s page.
With social media, I kind of just started posting my work and what I loved with short captions and a good bio. I posted every single day, without fail. If you want something, you need to be persistent at it.
Also, I’ve the hashtags #explorepage and #trending are very helpful with my posts so far, if that helps.
I would say don’t strive for fame. Strive to reach your target audience. Social media is there to broadcast and network with you and others. Don’t get caught up in the numbers, and set a daily limit for yourself so you stay in the present.
