We recently connected with Soul Stretch and have shared our conversation below.
Soul Stretch, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I love music as a consumer more than the majority of things in the world. I only began making music after listening to my favorite artists and feeling they should have done a song or a line different than the final product. As I challenged those Ideas by creating music of my own, I found I consumed much less than I had before. I’m an obsessive. I spent a lot of time locked away perfecting my sound and making what I thought people would enjoy. I found that without the inspiration of others I was often stuck and making music I was no longer passionate about. I’ve taken a lot more time in the last couple of months to step back and live in the present a little more. Music is just a capsule of experience, and for a while, I wasn’t creating enough moments to write about. I wouldn’t say I would have changed anything because working so intensely did help in creating my sound. Although if I could speak to that person locked away creating a year or two ago, I would tell him its ok to take a few more breaks to enjoy the moment. It makes better music.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by Soul Stretch. I’m a melodic hip-hop artist based in Los Angeles, California, striving to entertain and inspire. Born in Ghana, I feel it’s my obligation to my family to chase the American dream and build something that will last long after I am gone. Heavily influenced by both Hip Hop and RnB, I’m working to cut through the noise of the music industry to create something worth remembering.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I’m very big on self help/personal development books. My life changing recommendations are Think and Grow Rich(Or Magic Ladder to success), 48 Laws of Power, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and Atomic Habits. Together these teach you everything from working based on habits and not motivation, chasing something bigger than life, how to interact with people, manifestation, and much more.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think being an artist boils down to a really simple thing, making something incredible dope and sharing it. Excluding metrics, I think this is my primary goal as an artist. I hope to be able to share with as many people as possible.
