We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Iman Da Don a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Iman , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Honestly, I knew the moment I could walk and talk that music and art was my destiny. I was reciting lyrics and performing in public before I could walk.
My mom always tells the story of me singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” in a department store and when I noticed people watching I started to sing louder and put on a show.
That has always been who I am.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those that don’t know I am Iman Da Don. I am a rapper and actress located in Houston, Texas. I like to think that what sets me apart is being unapologetically me. I never try to fit in with any particular crowd or ride anyone else’s wave. I make the waves.
I create fun music that people can feel good about ingesting. I like to think I bring that same energy with acting as well, I love to dig deep into a character and figure out how I can use my personal experiences to tap into the role.
Something that Viola Davis said in an interview with Oprah always stands out to me, she said something to the tune of her process when getting a new role is finding out what the character is living for.
I am really proud that I continue to get up and go every day. I choose me every day. I truly believe that you can achieve any goal you work hard enough to achieve. As I am doing this interview, I’m still floating from my first performance at House of Blues Foundation Room. One step closer to everything I imagined.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to live life with no “what ifs” or “maybes”. My goal is to go about life knowing that if something didn’t work out it was because it wasn’t meant to be not because I gave up or didn’t try as hard as I could.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think NFTs are very interesting and a win for creatives but I definitely don’t fully understand how they work.
