Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gina Owens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Gina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Music was my first love. When I was 3 it became obvious I wanted to be a singer when I would serenade all of the ladies at church. I was barely making sentences but could somehow sing an entire Dianna Ross song. When I was 4, my parents signed me up for my first local talent show. That’s when I knew the stage is where I wanted to be. I remember standing in front of my town wearing cowboy boots and feeling like I was Shania Twain! From there I sang every chance I could. I started a “band” in 3rd grade and tried my hand at songwriting. My friends and I would spend our entire recess writing songs and choreographing dances so we could perform them for our class.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Gina Owens (but recently Gina Burbridge after getting married 4th of July weekend!). I’m a singer/songwriter from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I focus on mostly on country music but I perform a wide variety of genres! Over the last two years I’ve been recording music in Nashville and playing live all over the state of Iowa! I’ve been in love with music and singing my entire life but didn’t pursue it professionally until 2021 after taking a trip down to Nashville. I was so inspired by the energy and talent we watched all weekend that it re-sparked a lifelong dream that I was always too afraid to pursue. Two years later I am living my dream!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a songwriter, I love putting my heart down on a piece of paper and turning it into something magical. When I have the opportunity to share an original song, it’s the most rewarding feeling to have someone tell you that they related to your words. Lyrics connect people on such a deep level and to be able to write something that is healing to someone, or makes them dance on their drive to work – whatever the connection may be, I love being a small part of that.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew how connected the music community truly was. I was so afraid to follow my dream because I didn’t know where to start. I thought it was a “everyone for themselves” situation, but after finally taking the leap of faith I’ve quickly learned that musicians support musicians. The connections I’ve made have lead to some pretty amazing opportunities. Everyone wants to support each other whether it’s simply sharing a post on their social media, coming to a show, or giving a piece of advice. You can’t beat it.
