We recently connected with Andrea Amaral and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
It’s kind of weird how I got my first and only job in the industry so far. Around 10 years ago I was taking different classes in Mt.sac including “english as a second language” there I met Mahelia, my now friend, coworker and teacher! At that time I was a bit confused about which path I wanted to take, I had always liked the beauty industry but I was not sure which branch to lean towards, Mahelia told me that she had a spa, and that if I was interested on a Saturday I could go to get to know the place and see how it worked. and that’s what I did, I went to see her business, I loved what I saw and I fell in love with the profession, so I went to school full time and at the same time I worked with her on Saturdays as an assistant and 6 months later I received my license and since then I’ve been here!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a licensed esthetician, the treatments I offer are facials for all skin types and any problem, I treat acne including acne on the chest, back or buttocks. I do wax on any area of the body from the toes to the head. body treatments that help detoxify, drain and shape the body and last but not least lashlifting and browlamination. People come to me mostly for brazilian wax and specially for my Anti- aging treatment as it helps slow down aging.
Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful parts of this profession is being able to help and see the happy faces of my clients when they see the changes that we have achieved, because this is teamwork, the work that I do in my room is important, but it is more important is the monitoring and care they have at home.
One of my missions is to teach and educate about personal care, especially to my Latin people who do not have the care or education about the use of sunscreen! Sun rays are the first cause of premature aging, dark spots and melanoma, that’s why it is so important to use sunscreen every day! Since the damages by the sun are irreversible.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Definitely being in constant learning and keeping updated on new techniques is good, but what has worked the most for me is working correctly, being honest with my clients and being clear about the expectations and realities of the services, adapting each treatment to the skin needs of my clients and keeping my workspace clean has been the key!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Without thinking about it, I would choose the same profession again! I am in love with my work, I do it with passion and I enjoy it so much that it doesn’t feel like work. It is very nice to see the smiles on the faces of my clients at the end of the treatments, it feels wonderful when they tell you that you made them forget about their problems for a moment and could relax, for me each client is a success story! This is a very noble and beautiful profession.
