We recently connected with Molly McKinnon and have shared our conversation below.
Molly , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents? What didn’t they do right! They are incredible and both such an inspiration to me. They taught me the work ethic that I have today! Without them teaching me that hard work pays off, I truly don’t know if I would have the motivation that I do today to work as hard as I do. Not a day goes by that they aren’t rooting for me or cheering me on in my business. I could have asked for better role models not just when it comes to work ethic but as a person. I strive to be better every day because of them!
Molly , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Moab, moved to Salt Lake City for school and ended up staying for 5 years. I decided to move back to Moab almost a year ago to be closer to my family and enjoy familiar faces coming in to see me at work! It was honestly the best decision I could have made! Everyone has been so amazing and supportive of my small business and I get to work alongside some of the coolest and most talented women every day, the building I work out of is beautiful and I feel so lucky to be a part of something so special.
I started growing my business this year by hosting events and creating a logo to sell on merchandise for my clients/friends/family- and let me tell you, it is SO cool to see everyone wearing it around town. I have the best clients and they don’t even feel like clients anymore, it feels like I get to hang out with my friends all day everyday. I think that’s what I pride myself in the most when it comes to business. Making those relationships with these amazing people is so important to me!
I offer eyelash extensions, permanent makeup like brows and lips, brow lamination, teeth whitening, skin care and facial waxing.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I learned in this industry is that competition with anyone but yourself is unnecessary! The more you lift and support others, the more they do the same for you! For example, I worked with 10 other powerful women at one time and learned so much from each and every one of them! In personal life and in my work life. You benefit so much from just helping others because the good karma comes back around. We all have our own ways and techniques that we pick up on over time, sharing those with others to help them the way it helps you will only bring the same in return!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I would have to say it’s building those relationships with your clients. Being able to create an experience for your clients and not just a “one time appointment” feeling keeps them coming back not only for your services but because they feel that you genuinely care. My clients make what I do as fun and rewarding as it is. Without these amazing people returning to me time and time again and trusting me with their self care, I would be nothing. I feel so extremely grateful I get to spend time with these special people for a living.
