We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tasha Jay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tasha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve been singing all my life however, when I moved out to Dallas, I got exposed to a lot of musical resources. I started working at a music school, Createvation in Frisco teaching kid’s voice lessons in 2018. There I was able to explore recording and the ins and outs of that. At that time I then decided to explore what I like to call the start of my music career. I started off with a cover album outlining a few of my favorite artists and songs. I then decided I was ready to take that risk and put my own music out there. I started by writing my own music based off experiences in my life as well as made up stories. I purchased beats and hired a producer who begin to put my creation to life. We work through the pandemic really hard and at the end of 2020 I was able to put out my first major single and my first EP! I do not regret a moment of the process, and any of the hardships I experienced. I got so much great feedback from family, friends, colleagues and even strangers. This gave me the confidence to continue to put myself out there, continue to record music and even explore other musical opportunities.
Tasha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been singing, since I was about three years old in the tiny tot choir at church to voice lessons in middle school to taking music seriously in high school, and further majoring in music in college. I knew I wanted to pursue my music after I graduated so I stayed in tune with taking voice lessons, writing music and still be musically active. In the mist of me pursuing my solo music career, I was able to professionally teach voice lessons, so I begin to build a clientele around the DFW. Teaching at Createvation and Frisco allowed me to build a clientele. I still am currently teaching some of my students and have brought them along way. I am very proud of the work my students have done. Some of my students are recording their own music, making their own music videos and even pursuing their own music career. That right there is what I do it for.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
At the end of the day you just have to put yourself out there. Some days you are gonna get 1 million views some days you might only get seven. The main thing about building your brand on social media. It’s just staying consistent. You have to creative and keep peoples interest. Doing your research definitely helps when it comes to posting content and even building a fan base. Most importantly, don’t be so hard on yourself! Remember your following on social media takes time and doesn’t always come overnight.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’d have to say a major pivot in my music career was during and after I released my EP. I got so much good feedback which of course helped me stay positive and consistent in my craft. I begin to get a lot of traffic as far as gigs and opportunities to continue performing. In 2021 I entered a competition finishing in the top 10 and I even performed at a music festival. This is a major milestone in my music career that I’ll never forget.
