Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Soska. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
Sometimes, when operating a family business, there will be differences of opinion. It’s inevitable, really. We’ve all heard old adages about there being too many cooks in the kitchen and how it can be counter-productive, but I think one good approach to mitigating some of these obstacles is having a partner or a team that trusts you and your decisions, even if they might not 100% agree with them. As long as someone has the trust and faith to let someone else take the wheel without getting too nervous, I think everything will be just fine.
Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After many years of conducting sales and digital marketing for several companies in different verticals, I felt the need to embark on a work journey that was less about a paycheck and more about feeling good. I am a dog dad to a pair of 17lb rescues, and realized there were a lot of dogs and dog lovers in my neighborhood. So, my mother and I decided we would take this passion for canines and roll it into a small business. It took many months to get Hip Hip FurRay from an idea, to a brick & mortar premium pet spa that was ready to serve its community, but the end result was a swanky, inviting, dog grooming salon that leaves both pets and pet owners with a smile on their face with each visit.
As I get older, I realize the importance of enjoying everything that you do. And I’m not just talking about your leisure or the weekend. Your trips to the grocery store or car wash should be pleasant, too. Everything can or should be pleasant. (There are exceptions, I’m sure.) But generally speaking, it’s good to try to enjoy as many aspects of life as much as possible. We wanted to apply that same ideology to pet grooming. Not only for pet owners, but for pets, too.
Often times, pets don’t really like the Doctor’s office. (And more often than not, neither do their humans.) Nor do they like loud, crowded big-box stores. But, they need care. Whether it’s aesthetic to look great, or something non-cosmetic like a bath, flea treatment, or nail trim. The bottom line is that in order for a dog to look and feel their best, they need to be maintained, just like anything else. Our salon solves these needs, with professional attention, without the stress and cost of a trip to the vet, and without the commotion one might find at a large national chain store.
Our salon is always clean, as it is polished before and after each day. There’s always music playing in the lobby, there’s a free coffee bar, and the colors and decor are warm, pleasant, chic, and enjoyable. We built the pet grooming salon we’d want to take our dogs to, and we love the way it turned out.
We put this same thought and care into everything else. The shampoos, the conditioners, the towels, what we use to wash the towels, the tools, and even the things we use to clean the place. We cut no corners, and everything we do is done with safety and efficiency first, and cost second. This is a concept you seldom see these days, regardless of industry. We want all of our customers or future customers to know that the staff, and everything they use, is selected with their pet’s well-being in mind.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Not rushing anything. Constantly reminding ourselves we want it to be good. Not fast. Not cheap. Good. Great!
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We have a loyalty program our customers can use to accumulate points and cash them in for discounts on future services. We try to stay as active as we can on the web, responding to customer inquiries quickly, and posting as many photos as possible of our salon and its patrons. We also enjoy working with the city and nearby, relevant businesses to host special events, and expand our product and service offerings.
