Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Enam Bosokah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Enam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project that i have been a part of is the Wiki Unseen by Wikipedia. The project sought to bridge the visual gap within the open knowledge environment ie, the internet. The project identified that many Black people, indigenous peoples and people of colour do not have images attached to their Wikipedia articles. This slow down traffic to these articles making them almost invincible.
Part of my job was to help recreate an original image of these individuals to be made freely available for consumption.
Being the only African artist, from a number of three, chosen across the world working on the project, I felt honored to be part of a project of such importance, and more so because it has a thing to do with the REPRESENTATION.
Enam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Enam Bosokah is a portrait artist who lives and works in Accra, Ghana. He graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, with A Bachelors’ Degree in Fine Arts in 2011. Coming from a sculpture background, he has spent more time exploring drawing using the ballpoint pen for nearly a decade now. I am mostly inspired by my immediate surroundings, issues of identity and representation.
My recent body of work touches on Ghana’s share of the global plastic waste menace. In this project, I make portraits of people wrapped in polythene sheets (one of the most commonly used plastic product in the country. The drawings draw the viewer in and at the same time, almost immediately, makes them uncomfortable by the suffocating impressions captured in the compositions, echoing the idea that Plastics, as one of the friendliest materials consumed globally could also be very dangerous to humans.
Drawing with the pen can be a painstakingly long and exhausting process, however, switching between media has been very helpful in dealing with long turnaround times. Working in charcoal and pastel, my new interests, gives me options and a lot more fluidity and as well allows me to create bigger works. My practice is a constant search for existence through the various processes of making. Once a work is realized, the circle starts all over again.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a levelled playing field for all, and as such, you can only draw traffic to your account if you are doing something unique.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The most important factor that helped me in building up social my media following is simply putting out quality each single time. This is not something that i had to figure out while at it, but a decision that I made from the get go. While it is imperative that you create quality content/product, presentation is equally important. Consistency. Sharing something regularly in order to keep my followers locked in is rewarding. Although I have flaunted this rule severally, due to my interest in other art forms and media. I feel htat it is still a good point to note
The last but not the least point is engaging with your followers. Ask a question and get them to voice their opinions.
