We were lucky to catch up with Corey Boyd recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Corey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
For myself, becoming a personal trainer was second nature. I had been into weight lifting and fitness since middle school. And being the youngest of three boys, I grew up around sports and exercise. This affinity followed me throughout my life and I became known for working out. People came to me for workout advice and tips. Since it was something I loved, I didn’t consider getting paid for it. Growing up in a small town where the only gym was at the local high school, I didn’t even know there was a market for fitness knowledge. I was steered in the right direction by people that I knew and that knew my passion and wealth of knowledge. Once they insisted that I become a personal trainer, I followed the calling. One of the best decisions of my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Fitness has been my passion since middle school. I really consider myself blessed because I actually make a living doing what I love. If I wasn’t getting paid to train people, I’d still be in the gym lifting or giving someone fitness advice. What sets me apart from other trainers is that I treat my clients with care and I walk with them along their fitness journey. My training approach is down to earth and realistic while keeping in mind that this is a journey and a lifestyle. There will be ups and downs, ebbs and flows, but consistency is the precursor to progress.
I provide a fitness regimen according to each person’s goals and fitness level. There is no one size fits all approach because everyone has different goals, medical issues and areas of strength/weakness.
Lastly, just as I hold my clients accountable for adhering to a better and healthier lifestyle, I hold myself to the same standard.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Marketing is probably one of the most vital parts of business. I mainly utilize social media for marketing and for gaining clients. I built it from the ground up by being consistent and by being transparent. As a fitness professional, my body is my billboard and my way of life is an example. My social media displays how I live daily and how integral fitness is in my everyday life. My advice to anyone that uses social media for marketing or just for building a presence is to be the testimony that you preach. People may not always listen to your sermon but they will always notice the sermon you display.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My entire adult life has been a story of resilience. I was incarcerated at the young age of eighteen and wasn’t released until I turned thirty-four years old. I’ve endured the most menial and lowest paying jobs as well as not being able to find employment. I’ve also had to overcome housing discrimination despite the fact that I haven’t been in any trouble for over twenty-five years. The system is unforgiving. But all that taught me that my best route was entrepreneurship. Resilience and my faith in God has been immeasurable in my journey. My life is a living testimony that you must have faith and resilience.
