We recently connected with Jennifer Meyer and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Everything about my mission comes directly from my lived experience in finding my way after my son was diagnosed with autism. I was a young mother and wife and I have always wanted to optimize my experience. How can I improve, and make things “better”? It’s a deep personal desire to learn, and experience. After my son was diagnosed I went through a period of denial, and then I went to war. I went to war with that diagnosis. It didn’t feel real to me and I was certain I could make it go away. Needless to say, that didn’t happen, autism kicked my ass. My marriage ended and I was lost and confused. But that personal desire to grow, learn, and experience pushed me to find ways to improve the quality of my life and that of my kids. Everything in me now just wants to help show others how they can do the same. No matter what life throws at you, you do have some control over the quality of your experience. I stumbled my way to those answers and I want to help people not stumble for as long.
Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am my business brand. I know that sounds a little arrogant but everything about my business starts with how I show up in the world. My personal values all shape who I am and guide me in my choices. Those guide posts are what I help others to define for themselves to empower them to live a more purposeful and fulfilling life. As a solopreneur, my commitment to my mission is directly from lived experience. What I did to move out of fear, overwhelm, and depression and find a perspective that moves me to how I want to experience my life, not away from it. I do that through speaking and coaching, I do it through writing and videos. I try to live and show up authentically because that is what I want to awaken and inspire in my clients and viewers.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I feel like I’m always pivoting. :)
When I first tried to get started as a coach I felt like I wanted to help everyone. I felt (and still do feel) like I have a message that is relevant and helpful almost universally. What I soon realized though is that it’s true, if you cast to wide a net you might not get any fish. I really did need to narrow in on a specific audience. The world is really big and if you talk to everyone you get lost in the background. It was important for me to pick a lane and talk to a direct group of people.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Everything that Gary Vaynerchuk and Brene Brow say I devour. I think they both speak to the soft skills of business ownership and not only do I find it personally interesting, but I also think all of it foundational level on real success – which isn’t about your bottom line all the time.
