We were lucky to catch up with Rocio Arroyo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rocio , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission started back when I was j high school. I started to take classes in child development I was interested in being a teacher and making a difference in children/families lives. There was that one teacher, that made a difference in my student life and so, my mission and goals were to have a career in the education field and make a difference in a child’s life. I’ve been an Educator for over 25 years and I know that God placed me on this earth to help families and their children. Being in the classroom, brings so much joy to my heart and soul. Those smiles of the children in the classroom are priceless and the appreciation from the families that I made a difference in their child’s life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Rocio Arroyo, I have been an Educator for the last 25 yrs. My goal as first generation in my family was to go to school and receive my degree. My parents always encouraged my brother and myself to finish school and pursue to get a career. My always told me, ” Quieres trabajar como un burro?” Meaning, if I wanted to work hard or work easy. Obviously, I wanted to a career and not job a job,so I decided to go to college. My parents taught us to be responsible, have goals, strive for bigger and better things. They showed us to have morals, be kind, but most of all to do what we loved. I received my AA in Liberal Arts at PCC, from there I transferred to CSULB and majored in Child Development. While working on my degree, I had the opportunity to work at the child development center that was on campus. I was in the process of doing my field work, when I was given the opportunity to work there as well I was a full-time student-teacher, working at the child development center and also working at the campus library. I was driven and had my eye on the goal. Once, I receive my BA, I applied to the Masters Program., I was blessed to get accepted and move forward with my goals. After another two years of vigorous work,I received my MA in Education. Being a teacher and having someone open their doors to you wasn’t easy at the beginning. I’ve had numerous doors close on me and I’ve had doors open up to me and gave me the opportunity to begin my career. I started as a potty training teacher, then preschool teacher, then pre-k teacher, then kindergarten teacher, then after-school school teacher, head start teacher and then I was given the opportunity to grow as a site director. This position was one the hardest but most fulfilling because I learned to be a leader, to make hard decisions, guide your own staff and site. I was in this position for almost nine years, until COVID hit and got laid off. This was hard for me to accept but I kept myself busy by doing trainings online. As the days went by, I was given hard love and advice by my spouse. He suggested, I provide my own services to families and children that were in need. He said, I needed to see my value and how precious of a gem I am to this world, he never gave on me, He like my parents, always believed in me. So, now I offer my own personal services to families, that have children that might need a little push in certain areas. Such as reading, math, phonics. I love working with the little ones, that is what I love and these families see the value and experience I bring to the table. And you really can’t put a price on your child’s education.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Offering my personal services (tutoring) hasn’t been the easiest road, but the way I have marketed myself is by having a social media platform where I post and share about educational interests, activities, research on child development. My main source of help and support of where I get my students is by word of mouth, referrals from the families I have worked with and previous students.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source I would have too say is word of mouth, references/referrals, and number one my educational and experience speaks for itself.
