FO$$ , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I have taken was when I made the choice to change careers and move from Massachusetts to Miami. After a 13-year career as a high school Spanish teacher I decided to resign from my position and move to Miami to pursue my art professionally. It was definitely a risk, leaving behind a stable career with great benefits and a retirement plan to pursue art. Art is probably the least stable career there is, but it’s what I love to do and truly have a passion for. Like one of my closest friends always tells me, no risk, no reward!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been an artist. I started painting when I was about two years old and never stopped. When I was working full time as a teacher I did my art on the side but always wanted to take the leap and try to pursue it full time. I followed several full time artists on social media that inspired me and I figured that the only thing stopping me from doing what they do was my fear of taking that leap. I finally decided almost two years ago to go for it and moved to Miami. I’m so glad I did! I create custom paintings, clothing, basketball hoops and even furniture for my art collectors. Most of the art I create are original 1 of 1 pieces, but I also sell hand embellished prints of my work, which makes it accessible to everyone at any price point. I’m so honored to have my work in some amazing places like the Porsche Design Tower, Grails Wynwood, and in the homes of some of Miami’s best professional athletes and entertainers. I take pride in my work ethic and the valuable relationships I have built with my collectors and galleries. One of the things that sets my work apart is my attention to detail and cleanliness of my artwork. I love to collaborate with my clients and bring their ideas to life.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for my art business have been the several art fairs I attend throughout the country. While these events are quite a financial investment and sometimes require travel, they are so beneficial to me as an artist. Displaying your work for thousands of people and potential collectors is the best way to get out there and be seen!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of the ways I have grown my social media is by partnering with one of Miami’s most popular sports bars located in the heart of Wynwood. Throughout the year I create custom pieces of sports related artwork that is raffled to their clients and followers. This is a great way for people to tag their friends, engage with the content and enter to win an original art piece. In doing so, they are introduced to my work and to me as an artist.
