Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruby Jones . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ruby, thanks for joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
When I first started my career as a makeup artist, I worked in the film industry and my goal was to make a career for myself working in this industry. After experiencing the culture and work environment of the industry, I realized that it wasn’t the healthiest due to the lack of regard for work/life balance and health. Although I kind of had to switch my career path due to being diagnosed with a physical disability, while I was working in the film industry I had the opportunity to learn how important taking care of your health as well as having a good work/life balance and prioritizing these things instead of overworking yourself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Ruby and I’m a professional makeup artist & content creator from Vancouver, BC. However, I currently work full time in the social media industry. I started my career as a makeup artist with a passion for working in the film industry specializing in prosthetic FX makeup. Due to being diagnosed with a degenerative autoimmune disease I made the decision to switch my career to working for myself and on social media. Since then I have gotten to know my true passions more and develop a career doing what I love! I still do special effects makeup for fun on my social media accounts and love having the opportunity to work with new people and brands. About a year ago I also decided to start using my platforms to advocate and raise awareness for disability in the makeup & content creation industries! I have always been very passionate about art in general so am very grateful to be able to work in an industry where I can create art!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I talked a little bit about this in a previous question but I had to do a pretty huge pivot in my career after being diagnosed with a disease called ankylosing spondylitis. A combination of losing out of opportunities due to having this disability as well as my own personal decision led me to change career paths from working as a professional makeup artist in the film industry, to working in social media!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A goal I have specifically for my own social media pages is to raise awareness about disability in the makeup & content creator industries while sharing my art. I would love to have the opportunity to make an impact and inspire other people who might have gone through something similar to me!
