We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lina Camboulin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lina, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Not too long ago, I was a Software Sales Account Exec, climbing the corporate ladder and helping big time clients like Walmart, Target and Walgreens with their IT transformations. I had done everything that society said was the key to success – graduated from college, fancy 6 fig job, owning a car, living in an apartment by myself, but I was still deeply unhappy. My lifestyle used to consist of catching early bird flights to meet my clients on Monday and coming back on Thursdays – then going out to drink and party Friday, Saturday and Sunday, rinse and repeat. I was looking for fun and happiness, but instead I was lacking any passion and sinking deeper into anxiety and depression. I felt unfulfilled, disconnected from my true purpose, and constantly yearned for something more.
Then one day, early January 2020, I got an inkling to get roller skates! This was pre pandemic, I had just moved to Atlanta, and I hadn’t seen many people roller skating outdoors at the time, but I knew that I needed to have some sort of physical activity before I considered putting myself on medication. This was my last ditch effort to find relief from my emotional turmoil. Instead, I bought my first pair of skates, and then I got super lucky and ran into a girl near my apartment that told me about a small meetup in a random parking lot that met once a week, and the rest is history!
Roller skating became my escape, my sanctuary, and my way to connect with something deeper within me. It helped me rediscover my spirituality and my true calling in life. So, I took a leap of faith and quit my job to focus on fulfilling what actually lit me up.
Now, I’m on a mission to inspire others to connect with their mind, body and soul, and find relief from the worries of the world through intentional movement, just as I did. Through my content, workshops, and events, I’m creating a community where we can all connect, support each other, and grow together.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am very passionate about healing trauma in the Black community – so it was absolutely groundbreaking to me when I discovered for myself how powerful (and simple!) of a solution rollerskating is when it comes to relieving not only anxiety and stress, but in processing trauma.
I used to think that I would have to spend time doing things I did not love, like running, or staying in the gym in order to experience small benefits, like a short term endorphin rush. However, movement, play, and community is an ancient modality that we have always known to use in order to heal ourselves. Some of us have disconnected from that knowing, so my mission is to remind ourselves of this beautiful tool we have access to.
Currently I run a community organization (soon to be non-profit) called BOSS ATL where Black skaters can come together, heal through inner child play and foster long lasting friendships.
I also empower and inspire and teach any one who desires to roller-skate, so they can tap into this healing for themselves.
Those looking for deeper relief and guidance can book a session with me in person or virtually to work through where they are experiencing patterns that they would like to be freed from, using skating to help move and process that energy through their body instead of over-intellectualizing it.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Although it is clearer to me now, when I first quit my job I did not know what I was going to do. I had ideas of starting a wellness consulting company and opening up a retreat center – especially since I thought that was the “right” thing to do. However, I was stuck and unsure of what direction to take to make that happen. I realized I needed help, and hired a business coach.
To my surprise that coach told me that instead of opening a wellness consulting company, I should instead focus on rollerskating!
That made no sense to me, as I really felt that rollerskating was “not a real job”. However she saw the light and the passion I had with it, as well as the way I inspired people around me just through showing up and being myself and told me to go for it!
Once I leaned into it further I realized that there is so much more I can do with rollerskating than just performing and teaching the basics.
Rollerskating is healing, healing deep traumas, soothing anxieties, removing energetic blockages… It taps you into your feminine energy and opens you up to a higher source of energy.
It is truly a very powerful healing tool… when used with intention.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A major principle of mine is to watch my diet. And I’m not talking about just food!
I am in fact plant-based, however diet for me extends farther than that into watching everything that I consume. I only consume things that are going to raise or maintain my vibration.
This impacts my business decisions, as I am aware that the success of your business depends on your vibrational match to the outcome that you are looking for.
My favorite content to consume is Abraham Hicks, Joe Dispenza, Jay Shetty, and the Know Thyself Podcast. Lately I have been getting into Sahara Rose’s Higher Self Podcast as well!
I am always inspired and lifted after hearing these inspirational people talk about their journeys, their mission, and how they serve the people around them with their gifts.
