We were lucky to catch up with Birdy Music recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Birdy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A time I took a risk, there are many but one that stands out was I booked on to an event in Tracy, California at the time I was on a very tight budget so I decided to take the Greyhound Bus and it seemed kinda exciting. During the trip I would have to stop in Reno, Oakland and Tracy. I put together my funds and book my trip, so during my trip first stop is Reno and to make a long story short on my way back from exploring the city I found 100$ bill at the gas station so things was looking up. In Oakland now I get there and the people i’m doing the show with have not responded this whole time, i’m just thinking there busy and will connect soon. I get off the Greyhound in Oakland and go explore its during the NBA finals so everyone is screaming throughout the streets because the Warriors are playing the Cavaliers at this time. I kinda run into some crazy areas and some good areas but with only having a backpack and myself I start to head back because I realized my hotel room is not booked until tomorrow and I got to get off the streets before night and before the Greyhound station closes, i’m in east Oakland there is lot of homeless and the daytime seems fine but I have been warned about being here in the night time. I never found a room but luckily this cool lady helped me get a ticket to San Fransisco where the Greyhound is open 24 hours, I would have to sleep on a metal bench but would be better then being on the streets in the neighborhood I was in. So after a fun night walking around San Fransisco and sleeping on a green metal bench feeling really rough and sore, I get up and get on my bus for Tracy. It was super hot in Tracy like an oven cooking you alive, to make a long story short once i’m at my room later in the night waiting and getting ready for show I decide to walk to the store across the street. I get a phone call while in line by a stranger who is a part of the show/event saying “Everyone ain’t gonna make it to the show but there is a bottle and some girls so go over there and run the event” Now i’m definitely worried because the people who booked me out here never answered or responded even until this phone call. But a complete stranger says its good, things aren’t looking that way though and why would they want me there all by myself? So the whole night I just stay in my room and make up a story that some family is coming to see me, I have no weapon so at least maybe letting them think I have someone with me will hopefully keep them from looking for me. On the way back it got even stranger I was being followed by someone maybe two, even at the Greyhound in Oakland that I had to make another stop at the workers acted strange. But what really verified everything was the guy I seen outside In Reno station that I had to stop also I’d seen him before with the people who booked me at the show he waited outside the whole time I waited for the bus never came inside but waited outside and walked up to the door a few times. I don’t know what the plan was if I showed up to that show or didn’t watch my back but i’m glad I didn’t find out. I had a really amazing person on the bus to Reno tell me some really inspirational stuff and about things he knew about me it was strange but it made me feel better heading home. The point is I there are risks that sometimes you take that you waste time, money, time with family especially my son and also mentally tough. It was a moment when I really thought about quitting and doubting what I was doing. I have accomplished so much since this happened and have took more risks, I think its about your reason and why you want to make it happen because you will not always be motivated it gets hard but you must be very disciplined.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the music industry by just going for it, I really had no connections, no money to fund my career and it was actually at really hard and bad/good time in my life and in life it got worse to be honest. But no matter I kept making phone calls and getting as much as advice as I could staying consistent. I found a local studio that I got an internship there because a program that was supposed to be for the lower income people. I was young and made plenty mistakes and learned learned learned. I learned to sound engineer, mix my music and produce my own beats/instrumentals. I already wrote music and loved it so now I could honestly do it on my own. I eventually got kicked out of the internship after a year because of swearing on a song on which wasn’t allowed. From there I started doing local shows and kept getting more opportunities. I think the number one thing is stay consistent and learn what bridges to burn and Not burn. I provide music services, I write music, produce, I can record music, mix music and have some basic mastering skills. I can host events, perform, and would also like to try acting. I have merchandise and help with trying to give back to the community as much as possible. I think what sets me apart from other artists is there are no Utah Hip Hop artists traveling regularly and getting booked on shows like I am and no one else has my story from Utah I am very original and unique. What I am most proud of I have been able to take my family traveling and I have done shows and worked with major artists that have inspired me to get into the music industry. I feel that followers or new clients will be able to be apart of making history by being the first major hip hop artist from Utah and help the community build more and offer jobs/opportunities the more bigger we can grow.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
My views are I think NFT’s are great and would definitely like to offer them and have my own line or brand of NFTs. I think they are so new that there are many opportunities with the metaverse and blockchain especially for creators/ artists/ businesses. If I were able to sell them I would offer more then just an NFT but concert tickets, merchandise and so much more that would come with my NFT and I still try to continue to learn more.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I would say there are some books more then anything I think The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, The Tipping Point and David and Goliath by Malcom Gladwell, Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahnerman, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Five Dysfunction’s of a Team and The Godfather by Mario Puzo . I have read a lot more books but these have giving a lot of good resource to the industry that I am in, in my opinion. Videos there are so many online these days but sometimes the best resources are reading. Also the 1994 Inaugural speech from Nelson Mandela. Another resource I would say is Work Out in some way for at least 30 minutes or more 4 to 5 days a week or at least 3 days a week.
