We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chelsea Sommerfeld. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chelsea below.
Chelsea , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Chelsea Sommerfeld and I am an artist and designer. I practiced creating art from a young age and knew going into high school that I wanted a career in the creative industry. I decided to further my artistic abilities into interior design and obtained my bachelors of science from Kansas State University in 2011. After graduation, it was hard to find a full-time design job at the time but I was able to find a part-time design assistant position at a residential design firm in Wichita, KS. I was not previously interested in doing residential design, but this position opened up my eyes to an aesthetic that has stuck with me today. I moved to Denver in 2013 and began working for a fast-paced model-merchandising design firm. Working at this company allowed me the ability to design entire homes from start to finish. I acquired a wealth of knowledge within a short timeframe. This position also allowed me to realize my favorite part of design, the art. The artwork in a home is the most personal belonging and can truly tell a story or a memory. Fast-forward, I had my daughter in late spring of 2021. During my maternity leave/postpartum I became aware of the need and desire for a creative outlet. I began creating art, mostly for our home and was encouraged by my family and close friends to start sharing my work. I also started collecting vintage and antique frames to display my artwork in. This was the beginning and basis of my career as an artist. I have since expanded from small works to large canvases, commission artwork as well as prints and original art in stores across the country and worldwide collectors.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to create and do something that you love every day. I never thought in my wildest dreams that this could sustain as a career.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal and mission for my creative journey is constant and I’m not sure if it will ever end. I’m always searching and experimenting, pushing myself to create something that I haven’t created before. I always have a million ideas in my head of things I want to create. the feeling of knowing that I can share my talents with others and that they want to have my artwork in their homes, the most personal space, is the most rewarding experience. I’m forever grateful and forever driven to continue.
