We were lucky to catch up with Floyd Roith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Floyd, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Life is full of opportunities and choices, if it wasn’t for my father, giving me the opportunity to take the risk and follow my dreams and turn my art into a full-time career. I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. There’s no better feeling than being blessed with the opportunity to take what you love and turn it into a full-time living it’s not even like a job, every day I get to wake up and be happy that I get to create something that someone is going to enjoy for the rest of their life. A piece of art created and customized solely by me that someone has decided to put on their body permanently. I am very blessed to be in the position I am today, if it wasn’t for the friends and family that helped drive my dream and help push me and also give me the opportunities I needed to be in the position I am today I would not have achieved my goals. Being a full-time artist is absolutely a dream Come true I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
Floyd, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
About myself I’ve been drawing my whole life after school I would sit at my desk with my headphones in and just draw. My dad always was into my drawings. He always that thought. I had a lot of potential at 17 I went to the Navy after getting out of the Navy I had a job at Walmart after some time working there. I had a girlfriend who ended up seeing some of my artwork and thought it was really good so she bought me a tattoo kit, I was not really for it. I was very shy about my artwork. I never thought it was that good after getting the tattoo kit and watching a short apprentice DVD I did my first tattoo on myself to my surprise. It came out very well after doing tattoos on family and friends for about six months I did my first shading piece , it looked really amazing. It actually caught the site of one local tattoo. Artist who asked who had done it my body. I told him that his friend Floyd did it. He asked was shop I worked at. My friend then replied that I didn’t work at a shop that I had only been doing it for a short time. He had told my friend to tell me to come in and he would apprentice me properly. My first job was a bad ass tattoo in Cheyenne, Wyoming after working there for 3 1/2 years I was a professional tattoo artist and learned the tricks of the trade, and I have now been doing it for 11 years. and these 11 years I have learned a lot works with some really great artists who have helped shape me into the artist that I am today. My business is to take a person looking to get some artwork on their body having them come in for a consultation and then we brainstorm over some ideas as far as style color or black and gray and then the design as a whole, I use my creative license to help my clients come up with an idea that they are going to love then a custom draw every tattoo to fit the body, and to be everything that they are looking for. I strive to meet the needs of my clients and to get in their heads and designed exactly if not better a piece of art that they are going to look at every day and absolutely love. There is nothing like seeing your clients face when they see that tattoo and it just lights up that’s what does it for me. I am very well-rounded and can accomplish any style of tattoo or artwork. My clients are looking for anyone who is looking to get a tattoo or to become a potential client. All they have to do is text me or come into the shop at warhawk Tattoo in Layton Utah, and come get a free consultation, I am always accepting new clients. You can follow my work on Instagram at snowwolftattoos. I look forward to anyone who’s reading this and wants to become a potential client. Thank you it’s because of my clients why I am able to do what I love every day for a living.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist to me is that feeling I get when I am able to takes what somebody has vision and create it, and put it on their body, and then, every time I see them, the joy that they have in their eyes, and the thank youse, I get is the most gratifying thing I can feel as an artist, knowing that I have made someone’s vision come true for them. That is a permanent thing. There is no other feeling than that accomplishing or over exceeding someone’s goal.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way that I I know for society to best support artists and their local community is to support them by meeting them and seeing if they have some thing that you like or love and giving your business to a local artist. You never know the kind of talent that you can find in your local area it’s amazing to see what some of these artists can come up with even when I go to local galleries, some of the paintings that I see blow my mind, go check out your local galleries, tattoo shops, and other forms of art art comes in many fashions whether it’s from dancing to paining to tattooing support your local artist
