Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nick & Alex Fos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nick & Alex, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Nick worked as a main refinisher for a vintage furniture store and they brought me (Alex) on for their marketing, website, social media and customer service. We both worked there for a few years until they began manufacturing new / custom furniture. Our heart was in the vintage pieces. So we talked to the owners of the business and they encouraged us to start our own restoration business. It all happened very quickly! We started as restoration only for customers (for about 6 months) and then began accumulating midcentury and danish modern inventory for our dream store!

Nick & Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We specialize in refinishing and repairing midcentury and danish modern furniture. We offer customer restoration and also restore pieces that we pick to sell in our store and second space at Slate Interiors in Charlotte, NC – a multi merchant venue. We love being able to bring pieces back to life and give them many more years to be used.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We have been in the vintage furniture business for 10+ years and there aren’t many people that do it – in a way it is a lost art. We strive for perfection when working on a piece for our inventory or a client. We use the best tools and refinishing products, and pride ourselves on having great customer service. We also do a lot to try and promote preservation of midcentury furniture and architecture. We have also been on the committee for The Charlotte Museum of History’s “Mad About Modern Home Tour” for 6 years.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
We are a husband and wife team! This adds an extra level of comfort with each other but also adds interesting factors when trying to juggle a business and home life (and daughter – who will be 2 in August). We actually met in middle school in Charlotte, NC. We were friends up through school and started dating shortly after high school. We have been together since 2010 and got married in 2016 – coincidentally the same year we started our business!
