We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Somer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I think we go through life with multiple defining moments, small and big. Sometimes we might not even see them as defining at the time, but it will become clear later on how that moment truly changed our life.
However, the most defining moment in my life was when I lost my father to his addiction and mental illness 5 years ago. This became the catalyst for my spiritual awakening and self-discovery journey. In order for me to move through the grief I turned to meditation and this changed my life. Meditation showed me to anchor in something bigger than me, to sit with my emotions and move through them instead of suppressing them. This turned into an unraveling of layers deeper within. Through this healing process I learned how my depression and anxiety in my teenage years was a result of me never expressing my emotions that were present growing up with an alcoholic and bipolar father. I started to discover how much trauma, both mine and generational, was really buried underneath and as I started to heal – my passion for helping others do the same turned into my purpose. The healing modalities and the tools that I offer my clients are a collection of what I have learned that we as humans need in order for us to heal, grow and truly love ourselves. There are so many layers to what we identify as self, everyone is unique and we all are multidimensional. I believe our healing tools and support needs to be too. We have to do the work ourselves, but we do not need to do it alone. I am here to remind people of their power.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Andrea Somer. I am originally from Stockholm, Sweden but I have lived in LA for the past 9 years. I am an Embodiment and Empowerment Coach. I help individuals to connect with their bodies, cultivate self-awareness, self-love and empowerment. I help my clients develop a deeper understanding of their physical, emotional, and energetic selves, for personal growth, healing and transformation. I provide a supportive and transformative space for clients to explore their bodies, minds, and emotions. Through this process, my clients gain self-awareness, enhance their self-esteem, and cultivate a deep sense of empowerment and authenticity in their lives.
I started my career as a personal trainer and nutrition coach almost 6 years ago. The month after I started my first job at a corporate gym, my father died. I had to continue to pursue my dreams while going through the most difficult time of my life. This led into the path of meditation and I went to London to become a meditation teacher. I continued to educate myself on the things that I found was extremely important to optimize not only our physical health, but our mental, emotional and spiritual health. I became a certified life coach and combined my knowledge in movement, gut and hormonal health, along with mindfulness, mindset mastery, and most recently somatics and breathwork.
I believe that my broad knowledge and multidimensional approach is what sets me apart from other coaches makes the support I offer different from anybody else’s. I truly believe that everything is connected and my ability to see it from so many different viewpoints, as well as the variety of tools and modalities – makes the support I offer different from anybody else’s. Right now I offer my services mainly through 1;1 coaching and group coaching. I also host women’s retreats around the world, the next one soon to be announced.
What I am most proud of is my own journey, my authenticity and how I have moved through adversity in my life. I did not have examples of what true happiness and success looked like in my family. I lost my father and that side of the family to mental illness and suicide. I started with no money and I moved across the world on my own. I have gone through a lot of loss, healing myself and generational trauma, and built a 6 figure business. I want to show everyone and especially women, that they are worthy of standing in their power and creating everything that they desire and dream of in this life.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
At the time when the pandemic hit in 2020, I was still only working as a trainer in the gym. When the world closed down, so did my business. I had no income and I did not know how to move forward at first. I think the pandemic represents a pivotal time for most of us, especially business owners. This was a time to choose to make the best out of the situation and adapt, or simply lose and give up which was never an option for me. I started to virtually train clients, build out online programs and digital offers. I focused on enhancing my online presence, started to go live on Instagram and use social media to be able to help more people during this difficult time. This is when I decided to focus more on coaching and I started my own business. Adaptability and creativity are key during times of change.
I also lost my aunt that year to suicide which was another big emotional setback for me. Therefore it also became a time for me to learn even more about how I can take better care of myself, heal and grow, which only allows me to truly embody my teachings, and I believe that is incredibly important as a coach. During this time I continued to grow my business, anchor even deeper in my purpose and I am still on this journey of growing my business and pursuing my dreams. This time was proof of that, if you choose to continue to see the magic in life through adversity and pain, you live a life in service of others, you stay true to yourself and devoted to your purpose – you will have success and universe has your back.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There are so many things for us to unlearn about ourselves in our lifetime. I think one of my biggest ones, and I will say “story” instead of lesson – was my story identifying as a strong, independent woman. These are beautiful qualities in themselves, however as I peeled the layers underneath this identity I found the trauma of the little girl that needed to protect herself from emotional pain growing up with an alcoholic and bipolar father. This developed into a masculine shield where I did not feel like I needed anybody for help, I did not allow myself to express my emotions, to be vulnerable and soft, I only took pride in my doings and accomplishments, and did not allow myself to express freely or surrender completely in relationships or in life.
I share this story because I believe that the most important thing we can do in our journey of self-discovery is to question everything that we make part of our identity. It has been a beautiful journey in disarmoring myself and connecting deeper to my divine femininity. This has allowed me to live a life more in balance and honoring both my masculine and feminine, as well as stepping into my feminine power of expressing myself more freely and authentically, and cultivating deeper self-love. By acknowledging and honoring both masculine and feminine qualities, we can experience a greater sense of wholeness, self-acceptance, and inner harmony. It involves cultivating self-awareness, embracing vulnerability, and challenging any limiting beliefs or conditioning that may hinder our authentic expression.
