We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rivita Goyle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rivita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I had a natural inclination towards music ever since I was a child, lyrics and melody would come to me naturally. I’d write songs in my journals and I sang in the school choir ever since I can remember. By the time I was a teenager, I was totally obsessed with music and would listen to various bands and artists for hours, I started taking music lessons in guitar and voice and eventually went to University to study Popular Music Performance where I studied everything from technique to performance to production to composition.
I think that going to University and having the infrastructure to have a healthy environment to practice, to make mistakes and to learn played a huge role in my growth. The most important skills are to have patience with yourself, things just take time and when you focus and give yourself space then they have a way of falling into place.
Knowing what I know now, what could really speed up my learning process was to surround myself with positive influences and to retain a positive mindset at all times. In a creative industry like music the right atmosphere and temperament can genuinely accelerate growth.
Rivita, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Rivita, and I am a music maker originally from India. I’ve been writing songs since I was a child and would spend hours on end listening to music growing up. I had the opportunity to study Popular Music Performance at University and studied music from one of the best faculty in the world at BIMM, London (previously known as Tech Music Schools). After graduating from my Bachelor’s program, I went onto study a Masters degree in Composing for Film and TV at Kingston University, London. After graduating, I started self-releasing music as an artist and made some really cool music videos for my songs. My music video “Listen” went onto win the Indian Music Video Award in 2017 and was screened at numerous film festivals world wide.
I write songs, I produce and mix songs, I sing and I compose film scores. I am really proud of the songs I have written and released, it takes a lot of courage to put your music out there and to keep going on an artistic path. I have grown as a writer, producer and composer with each project that I have worked on and for me, the most essential part has been to compete against myself and to learn something new and to get better with each project. I have a unique voice and a unique vision and it’s interesting for me to self-produce my music to see where my imagination leads me and what I end up creating. I almost see making a song as making a painting, and for me, making art has been about translating what I hear inside my head and how I feel into tangible form. What I love the most about creating music is that each piece of music is different and each one has its own story to tell.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! I am an avid reader and there are a few books that have really made me see things in a new light:
1. “Finding Me” by Viola Davis
2. “Atomic Habits” by James Clear
3. “Becoming” by Michelle Obama
4. “Big Money Energy” by Ryan Serhant

Any advice for managing a team?
I think the best way to manage a team and to maintain high morale is to have genuine appreciation and respect for the people who are a part of the team, to value each other and to keep the dialogue straight forward, encouraging and positive can go a long way.
