We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stauney Hansen And Sadie Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stauney Hansen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Our podcast is called More Than a Muse and our purpose is uncovering the stories of women artists that are forgotten or misunderstood. One example of somebody we recently covered is Connie Converse. Before Bob Dylan, a young woman in Greenwich Village, New York wrote songs, sang, and played her guitar, becoming the first record of modern singer-songwriter. She escaped her strict upbringing to chase her dreams, only to be met with so much disappointment she would completely disappear never to be heard from again. Years later, her recordings would hit the radio airwaves and raise a cult following of the talent that was so far ahead of its time and yet barely missed lifetime fame by a few years.
There are countless stories of women from history that mirror this example of unrecognized innovation.
Stauney Hansen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
More Than A Muse” is a weekly podcast that showcases the often-overlooked stories of women who have contributed to the arts and history. The show is co-hosted by two talented women, Stauney Hansen, and Sadie Anderson, who are both dedicated to amplifying the voices of underrepresented women.
Sadie, an up-and-coming musician, has gained recognition in Nashville for her indie pop style known as “petty pop.” Her passion for music and the arts led her to co-host “More Than A Muse” with her high school best friend, Stauney. As a woman in the music industry, Sadie has firsthand experience with dismissive attitudes towards women, which fuels her commitment to empowering women in the arts.
Stauney is a graphic designer and art history enthusiast with a BFA in Graphic Design and a Minor in Art History. She dedicates her free time to co-hosting the podcast with Sadie, where together, they strive to shed light on women who have been overlooked or disregarded in history and the arts. Stauney’s passion for giving women the recognition they deserve and ensuring that women artists are remembered as ‘More Than A Muse’ is evident in the stories they share on the show.
Through their podcast, Stauney and Sadie hope to inspire current artists and empower women in the arts while also honoring those who have paved the way. Join them every Monday as they explore the stories of remarkable women who have made significant contributions to the arts and history.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our podcast’s mission is to share the stories of unrecognized women artists from history. Telling their stories is what continues to motivate us to continue, even when it feels difficult to balance this project with our full time work schedules.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of the job is when we uncover a woman who made a significant difference in their field. Some examples are Hilma Af Klint as an abstract painter, Connie Converse as the original singer/songwriter, or the story of Maria Anna Mozart was actually the older sister of THE Mozart and the original prodigy of the family.
