Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luke Rathe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Luke , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was 13 years old when I played my first paid gig. I remember the manager handing me $75 dollars at the end of the show and saying to my Mom “Is she serious”? I knew right then if I could make money doing what I’d had done for free that this was the life for me 😊
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was blessed with some great opportunities very young. In my teens traveled to many places with the band Scarlet Runner, opening for acts like ZZ Top, BB King, Pat Benatar to name a few. This was all before I was 20. Early on was really into the blues, funk styles of music, but have never been closed minded to all genres. I think that’s what has helped me through the years. Being able to stay versatile with all styles of music has kept me busy playing through the years. In the past few years I’ve really gotten into writing and playing guitar. One of the bands that I play for “Tifani Brooke & The Dam Outlaws” just released or first single “Percy Priest” which I was a writer on. It’s a great feeling to hear things come to life in the studio! I’ve been living in the Nashville are now for 2 years and have been blessed with some great opportunities. Have played with John Schneider (Bo Duke), Keith Burns (Trick Pony), Cody Mcarver ( Confederate Railroad). My goal is to just keep pushing ahead. Practicing, playing, writing ect. I’ve always been a fan of hard work. My mom use to tell me when I was a kid that I could do anything I set my mind to and that’s what I’ve done and so very grateful for it!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first came to town I had a road gig with an artist that lasted about a year. When that went away things got pretty thin for a while so I was living in my van for a couple of months until gigs started picking up. There were so cold mornings that’s for sure. I am so grateful for every gig and opportunity that comes my way and never take a single thing for granted.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
It’s hard for some people to understand that this is my “Job”. Often times people just think you don’t want to leave the party and that we actually make a living doing this. I think often times their just envious of the life we lead. I’m one lucky cat that’s for sure!
