We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SP Juice a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
SP, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project that I have worked on recently is titled “Juice For Breakfast , Volume 3”. “Juice for breakfast” represents a mixtape series that I started in 2018, however this most recent volume, that is slated to release April 20th, has extra sentimental value for several reasons. The first reason is that it is releasing on my birthday. Birthday releases are something I like to do every single year. My special day doesn’t feel right if I haven’t contributed new music as a small gift to the world and myself, to immortalize my presence and note my growth as an artist and an individual. The second reason is the year 2022 represents 10 years since I released my first song ever. Back in 2012 , the summer before my junior year in highschool I released my first song on SoundCloud. While it wasn’t that impressive musically, looking back, it set the tone and pace for my career as a musician and represents the moment I fell in love with the craft and listening to my own voice over recordings. The growth that I have accomplished since then is something I never could have foreseen, but it wouldn’t have even been possible without that first release. Ten years later here I am passionately pursuing music. It’s been a wonderful, frustrating, enlightening and stressful journey all wrapped into one. But I still wouldn’t have done it any different if given the option. For my ten year anniversary as an artist, I am proud to present my best and most proud work yet : “Juice For Breakfast Volume, 3”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know, I began experimenting with music around 8th grade, so that would be the calendar year 2009. My friend and I would hangout and turn on instrumentals , trying our best to freestyle like our favorite artists. I found myself having an innate talent and fell in love with the art. By the time I was in highschool my friends and I decided to start recording our songs over well known beats at the time, and enjoyed the process as well as how our music was received by peers and classmates. I continued to release music but found that between school and sports I couldn’t take it as serious as I would like. This changed when I got to college. I found a new found passion and desire to make music. In 2018 I rebranded myself as SPJuice and starting my mixtape series, vowing that I would do whatever it takes to make headway. Since then it’s been a wild journey filled with ups and downs, but I’m still here going strong. What sets me apart most is my drive and consistency, as I try to record and release as much music as I can. I have over 100 unreleased but I feel as though I can go so much harder and am just hitting my stride.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
What society can do to best support artists & creatives is to be more accepting. It is my opinion that artists are naturally sensitive people but are also often times misunderstood. They take everything that they have felt and transfer it into an art form, so whether you feel positively or negatively about what they have created, show respect first to the face that they have been willing to make themselves vulnerable.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The most important lesson I had to unlearn was that you have to do everything yourself if you want it done right. Having a team around me as dedicated to success as I am has been the number one factor that I believe has allowed me to create as much music as I have. I focus on my job intently while trusting and relying on my producers, engineers, & fellow collaborators to do the same. The product is always much better than what it would have been if I had tried to do everything alone.
