Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to M33CH. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
M33CH, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I released my latest project ‘Prestige’ on March 25th 2023. This project was created during a very transitional time of life that included many new changes such as becoming a father, finishing grad school as well as dealing with personal relationship changes. The title ‘Prestige’ symbolizes growth, empowerment and resilience despite those obstacles I endured while recording the songs. The project is evidence that although the pressures of life may feel like it is breaking you down into pieces, in reality it is breaking down unnecessary and toxic layers to reveal the diamond that always existed within.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a hip hop artist from the Twin Cities, Minnesota. With a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Family Social Sciences M33CH strives to use his intelligence to articulate positive lyrics and laid-back melodies to motivate urban youth. Some of his musical influences include Kanye West, Big Sean and Ludacris.
M33CH began making music at a young age, recording his first song at just 12 years old. Since he has progressed and performed all over the Twin Cities including opening up for Soulja Boy’s sold-out show at the Fine Line music hall, Minneapolis. M33CH’s debut project, BLESSED dropped March 9, 2018 with singles such as, ‘Minneapolis Nights’, that has been featured in the movie ‘What A Shame’. M33CH recently released a project entitled “Prestige”, which includes the leading singles ‘Switch it Up’ and ‘Better than Money’. M33CH has also hosted events through-out the twin cities at venues such as First Ave. 7th entry, The Pourhouse downtown, New Hope Cinema Grill, The Moxy, and more.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having a outlet to release tension and stress in a creative way. Having fans or supporters tell you how your art has impacted them and their lives gives me great fulfillment. Even individuals that don’t necessarily identify with my music or productions but simply like the way it sounds or enjoyed the perspective displayed in the art brings me joy. As I created my latest project ‘Prestige’, I would play my songs for my daughter and watch her bob her head and say “Daddy that’s your song! I like this song”, as she sings along is a priceless memory that i’ll cherish forever.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is creating music and other products for views, praise or fan reaction. Once I realized how quickly people forget a song or video and move on from it to the next best thing it was very disheartening. Having projects or songs not do as well as I’d like made me question myself as an artist and creative. It took for me to take my power back as an artist for me to be comfortable in my own artistry and create for myself and not others. As artist we have to create with confidence and authenticity without the worry of who will like it. As I began to create on my own terms, the pressure of being perfect was gone and replaced with the joys of simply creating and performing.
