Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danielle McCarthy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Danielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I do wish I had trusted in myself earlier to pursue this in a full time capacity. I started as a hobbyist in college and pursued an Etsy shop and did a few markets here and there. I am just now starting as a full time business owner and it has been so incredibly rewarding.
Danielle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Danielle McCarthy (she/her) and I create edgy, topical art and stationery products such as calendars, notepads, prints and stickers. I started with hand lettering and began my business hand painting canvases and greeting cards with inspiring quotes. I have since evolved and my business has with me, so now we get a bit more blunt and explicit with our art.
I am most proud of my work when people share with me how relatable it is. That they feel seen and can find a laugh from something I’ve created. My favorite products that I make are wall calendars – This year I’ll have at least 2 different designs.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think being on a different type of path from others is hard for people to understand. The fact that I work for myself and create my own schedule and only answer to my own goals and objectives can feel very unknown for some people that are on different paths. And I’ve often felt like I needed to justify to others what I am doing and why I’m doing it but I find myself most successful when I don’t give in to the urges of explaining myself to other people.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a person surrounded by others that work in corporate America and I spent the early part of my adult life with aspirations tied to corporate America, I’ve had to unlearn a lot of about work and productivity in order to pursue a more joyful life that allows me to have my creative small business.
